Chrome OS

I recently bought a HP Chromebook (14b-na0002AU) about a week ago. Everything has been perfectly fine up until today - the screen continuously darkens to the point where I need to use a flashlight to see anything. The laptop remains on, but I can't see anything! It's incredibly annoying as I have been trying to work and it happens out of nowhere.

I've turned off motion sensors in settings, put a small piece of black sticky tape over the light sensor (at least I'm hoping I put it over the sensor, the one to the right of the camera), and each time the screen goes dark - I do a force reset, which seems to fix it for the moment (UNTIL IT HAPPENS AGAIN!!). The reset is always very fast and restores my tabs open afterward, so nothing is lost - but it's still really annoying.

How can I fix this?? There doesn't seem to be a toggle setting for turning off light sensors. Could it be something else?
