Touch screen capabilites no longer works. Worked fine at 3AM, shutdown the computer and then this morning when I turned it on, it was no longer functioning. I checked the HID drivers and it does not appear to have touch screen listed. Tried to see if I can download drivers but it shows only Windows 10 as supported (I am currently running on Windows 11). There was no known update to my system last night so I'm not sure what could've caused this. This will be the second time this has happened to me. I managed to fix the problem the first time.

Hi @SuzStar1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

If the touchscreen was working normally at 3 AM and then stopped functioning after a shutdown/startup cycle, and you're no longer seeing the HID-compliant touchscreen entry in Device Manager, it sounds like Windows is no longer detecting the touchscreen device rather than the touchscreen simply being disabled.

Since you've experienced this before and were able to recover it, let's start with a few checks that often help when the touch device disappears unexpectedly.

First, perform a BIOS Recovery (Restore)

  1. Turn the notebook off completely.
  2. Connect the AC adapter.
  3. Press and hold Windows + B.
  4. While holding those keys, press and hold the Power button for 2–3 seconds.
  5. Release the Power button but continue holding Windows + B until the BIOS Recovery screen appears.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions and allow the recovery process to complete.

Check Device Manager

After Windows loads:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Click View > Show hidden devices.
  3. Expand Human Interface Devices.
  4. Look for:
    • HID-compliant touch screen
    • Any unknown devices
    • Any devices with a warning icon

If you see an unknown device, please let me know.

Scan for Hardware Changes

  1. In Device Manager, click Action > Scan for hardware changes.
  2. Wait a few moments and check whether the touchscreen device reappears.

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  1. Turn the notebook off.
  2. Power it on and immediately tap F2 repeatedly.
  3. Open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  4. Run the available component tests.

Windows Updates and Optional Updates

Even if you don't recall an update occurring overnight, please check:

  • Settings > Windows Update
  • Advanced Options > Optional Updates

Install any chipset, HID, firmware, or driver updates that may be available.

One thing I'd like to know:

  • What is the exact HP notebook model or product number (P/N)?
  • When you fixed this the first time, do you remember what step resolved it?
  • Does the touchscreen option disappear completely from Device Manager, or is it listed but disabled?

Please send the model details and, if possible, a screenshot of Device Manager with Human Interface Devices expanded. That will help us determine whether Windows has lost communication with the touchscreen controller or if the device itself is simply not being enumerated properly.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
