HP 850 G3
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi there,

Our department has two HP EliteBook models (850 G3 and 850 G4) which we would like to have connected to respective Apple Thunderbolt Display A1407 27" monitors (if at all possible) which were previously attached to old MacBook computers. As far as I've researched (and understood) from different forums (here inclusive), the quick specs of both EliteBooks, as well as the HP whitepaper HP USB Type-C™ (h20195.www2.hp.com/v2/GetPDF.aspx/4aa6-7466enw.pdf), the USB-C ports of the mentioned EliteBooks ONLY provide data transfer and power charging capabilites, BUT NO Thunderbolt technology support. Due to that, looking for a potential adapter to handle the connection between the EliteBook USB-C  port  and the Apple Display built-in Thunderbolt cable/port is POINTLESS.  Can anyone from HP support please confirm whether this is really the case? Am I right in my understanding?

If that's the case, would anyone out there know/suggest whether it's possible to use e.g. the available  EliteBook's DisplayPort  as an attempt to make the aimed connection with the Apple Display Thunderbolt (e.g. via an adapter/converter if that's at all available commercially)? Can anyone suggest anything else to try to make such kind of connection to work?

Thanks very much, in advance, for the attention/any tips!

Antonio

Hello acbellorib,

I'm sorry to say that this connection is impossible.

The USB-C port on this device is listed as a "USB Basic Type-C".

Furthermore, even PC + Apple Thunderbolt devices might not turn out all that well...

Thunderbolt Gen1 is basically an upgrade of DisplayPort, which you have but there is also no solution on this side. The DisplayPort to Thunderbolt is also impossible.

Found another forum thread regarding HP Elitebook 850 + Apple Thunderbolt Display and there seems to be a consensus: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/anyone-figure-out-how-to-connect-apple-thunderbolt-display-to-d...

All the best,

Eddy

Many thanks, dear Eddy, for your kind attention and quick reply!

I was almost sure that the connection would not be possible but was trying to exhaust any eventual additional options...

Cheers,

Antonio
