Hi,
I am experiencing the same problem as described below by previous user. I have a MacBook but have also tried to connect the display to another (non Apple) laptop and was experiencing the same issue. One recommendation was to install a driver/software so that the display and laptop "recognised" each other. However, this does not work for my MacBook so I was wondering how to solve this issue in my case. Any help will be much appreciated - thanks in advance!!
Hi,
I just bought an HP EliteDisplay S140u but it seems to be in permanent sleep mode? When I connect the monitor to my laptop, it shows the HP logo on the screen and then goes blank. The power button is lit up orange while it is plugged in but turns off when I unplug it. The laptop does not detect the second monitor at all and I'm not sure if it's due to being in sleep mode or something else. Also, the power button does not respond at all. It doesn't let me manually turn it off or on, the only way to get a response is to plug it in or unplug it.
I've tried installing and uninstalling the S140u driver, USB drivers, and the main display drivers on my laptop, no dice. I've tried using an adapter to go to a different port on my laptop, no dice. I've tried changing my laptop's power saver modes to see if it was somehow making the monitor sleep, nothing.
Any help is much appreciated, thank you.

Your HP EliteDisplay S140u not waking from sleep mode or being recognized by your MacBook. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:
-
Check Display Cable and Connections:
- Ensure that the display cable (e.g., USB-C, HDMI, DisplayPort) is securely connected to both the monitor and your MacBook.
- Try using a different cable or adapter to rule out cable issues.
-
Power Cycle the Monitor:
- Disconnect the monitor from your MacBook and power source.
- Press and hold the monitor's power button for about 15 seconds to perform a power cycle.
- Reconnect the monitor to your MacBook and power source, then turn it on.
-
Try Another MacBook:
- If possible, connect the monitor to another MacBook to see if it works. This can help determine if the issue is specific to your MacBook or the monitor.
-
Check MacBook Display Settings:
- On your MacBook, go to "System Preferences" > "Displays."
- Make sure the monitor is recognized and configured correctly in the display settings. You can arrange displays and set resolutions here.
-
Update MacBook OS and Drivers:
- Ensure that your MacBook is running the latest macOS version available.
- Check for firmware or driver updates specific to the monitor on the HP website.
-
Reset NVRAM/PRAM:
- On your MacBook, shut it down.
- Turn it back on and immediately press and hold the Option, Command, P, and R keys simultaneously.
- Keep holding the keys for about 20 seconds until you hear the startup chime twice. Then release the keys.
- Your MacBook's NVRAM/PRAM will be reset, and this can sometimes resolve display issues.
-
Check for Sleep Settings:
- In your MacBook's energy saver settings, check that it's not set to put displays to sleep too quickly.
-
Monitor Firmware Update:
- If available, update the firmware of your HP EliteDisplay S140u monitor. Manufacturers occasionally release firmware updates to address issues.
-
Try Safe Mode:
- Boot your MacBook into Safe Mode (hold Shift while starting your MacBook). This will load only essential drivers. Check if the monitor works in this mode.
-
Contact HP Support:
- If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it's advisable to contact HP customer support for further assistance, as it may involve hardware-related troubleshooting.
By following these steps, you can hopefully identify and resolve the problem with your HP EliteDisplay S140u and MacBook not recognizing each other or waking from sleep mode.
