Also done wIth HP products.

This worked for me, thanks (been looking for a solution all week). It seems that many people are having this problem on a variety of HP devices.

I was having the same problem this afternoon.

If this helps, before I registered as a forum user, I ran across an old message (which I can't find now) in the HP Support Forum that suggested powering down, taking the battery out, disconnecting the power supply, and then reinstall the battery, reconnect power, and boot the computer.

It worked for me!!

Hi all,

Found a solution, at least for an HP Envy m7 laptop running W10:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-start/i-cant-adjust-the-screen-brightne...

See GABO1423's reply from March 31, 2016:

Go to Device Manager

Choose your Display Adapter

Right Click And choose Update Driver Software

Choose Search for driver software on your computer

Choose "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"

In my case, changed to "Generic PnP Monitor" from "PnP-Monitor (Standard)"

The screen turned off, then on.  Then the F2/F3 brightness buttons began working again.
