Anytime there is dark content on the display mostly webpages the screen brightness automatically dims, then once a page with a white background is displayed the brightness slowly returns to full brightness. This laptop DOES NOT have adaptive brightness in any settings anywhere. How can I stop this from happening?

@F250PSD,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Envy laptop has Content Adaptive Brightness Control (CABC) enabled, which automatically adjusts brightness based on screen content. Since you don’t have adaptive brightness settings visible, try these solutions.

Disable CABC via Intel Graphics Command Center (for Intel GPUs)

  1. Right-click on your desktop and open Intel Graphics Command Center.
  2. Go to Display settings.
  3. Look for "Power" or "Adaptive Brightness".
  4. Disable any option related to "Display Power Savings", "Adaptive Contrast Enhancement", or "Dynamic Brightness".
  5. Apply the settings and restart your laptop.

Disable CABC via Windows Registry

If the Intel Graphics settings don’t have an option, you can try disabling it via the registry:

  1. Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
  2. Navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Intel\Display\igfxcui\profiles\Media
  3. Find "AdaptiveContrastControl" or similar.
  4. If found, double-click and set its value to 0.
  5. Restart your laptop.

Disable Vari-Bright (for AMD GPUs)

If you have an AMD Radeon GPU, do this:

  1. Open AMD Radeon Software (Right-click desktop → AMD Radeon Settings).
  2. Go to Display or Power.
  3. Disable "Vari-Bright" if available.
  4. Restart your laptop.

Check HP Command Center or BIOS

Some HP laptops allow disabling CABC via BIOS or HP Command Center.

  1. Open HP Command Center (search for it in Start).
  2. Look for Display Settings or Adaptive Brightness and disable any options.
  3. If unavailable, restart your laptop and enter the BIOS (press F10 at boot).
  4. Look for Adaptive Brightness / CABC / Dynamic Contrast and disable it.

Change Windows Graphics Settings

  1. Open Settings > System > Display.
  2. Scroll down and click Graphics settings.
  3. Under "Choose an app," select Desktop App > Browse.
  4. Add your browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, etc.).
  5. Click Options and set it to High Performance.
  6. Apply and restart.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
