HP Envy

I am not sure how long we have had the laptop now but I am sure over the year warranty. Several months ago we noticed the left hinge was broken and slowly it cracked the screen which is gradually getting worse and the screen is open somewhat on the left. We can not use the touchscreen function anymore. I was just using the laptop and tried to close it and it made a scary crack noise. We always looked after this computer and I am sure  it is a design fault over ours as I am noticing others have the same problem. We paid a lot of money for this laptop and I am extremely disappointed in the quality. We were working with the broken screen but now it is suddenly deteriorating quickly. I need this for work and can't afford a new one yet. Who else has had this problem and what can I do?

Hindsight and all that.  It is unfortunate the damage is now so severe.

You answered your own question - the issue has been reported by other than yourself.

You can use it like it is - but you do need to stop opening and closing the workstation to prevent more damage.

Why?  As bad as it is now, if the hinge assembly fails, it can leave the computer in worse shape and perhaps inoperable (not able to be used at all).

The practical "first steps" after not closing the computer:

What to do Today and every day that you continue to use the computer?

Do keep all your data (files and folders) backed up to other than on the computer itself.  Current backups are essential to protect your data.  If the computer suddenly becomes unusable, it will be too late to backtrack.

What else?

The unasked question is perhaps "Will HP fix my computer for me?"

We at the Community cannot answer that question - we are not HP Support and we don't speak for decisions made by HP or HP Support.

What else?

The computer is not going to get better - it will get worse, especially if the unit is opened and closed.

Aside from making very sure you have your data backed up to other than the computer, consider next steps - what to do?   Even if you opt to have the computer repaired, the repair is not simple, the cost may be more than the worth of the machine (the damage has started to affect components in addition to a simple hinge failure), and the computer would have to be "not with you" for a period of time.

That said,

  • I will submit a request that someone take a look.
