HP ENVY 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17-cr1000 (755C1AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I have tried for months to get my built-in camera working. I think maybe Microsoft and HP do not have the proper driver figured out/unavailable?

When using the Camera app's video, the screen of the app is initially black and then sometimes glitches a single image, then 5 seconds later an updated image (of me, as if the camera is trying to give a video feed). But I can't take a video or a picture and I cannot use my camera in Teams or any other app. I have tried everything on the internet it seems like. When I go to the support page for HP it only gives me two options for drivers: Windows 11 and Windows 11 version 22H2. My version for Windows 11 Home is "24H2". I downloaded and installed updates anyway and nothing has changed. Is there no fix for this issue?

Lastly, I should mention the camera light was always on when I started up the laptop. I changed the settings to make sure no programs using the camera would start at boot. But the camera light was always on. It was only when I switched the Privacy & Security > Camera settings toggled Off that the camera light no longer came on. But of course, I want to use the built-in camera. So if anyone has any other suggestions that would be greatly appreciated.

@soccerfan2208, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

We see you are facing an issue with the in-built camera of your HP ENVY Laptop PC 17.

Here's a step-by-step guide to help resolve the issue:

Check for Hidden Devices in Device Manager

  • Press Win + X → select Device Manager.
  • Click View → select Show hidden devices.
  • Expand Imaging Devices or Cameras.
  • If your camera appears grayed out, right-click and choose Uninstall device, then restart your PC.

Manually Reinstall the Camera Driver

  • Go to HP official driver page for your model and download the Windows 11 (22H2) camera driver.
  • Install it in compatibility mode:
    • Right-click the installer → PropertiesCompatibility tab.
    • Check Run this program in compatibility mode for: → select Windows 11 22H2.
    • Click Apply and OK, then run the installer.

Use Windows Optional Updates

  • Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates.
  • Look under Driver updates for any camera-related drivers and install them.

Check Privacy Settings

  • Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera.
  • Ensure Camera access and Let apps access your camera are both toggled On.
  • Scroll down and ensure apps like Camera, Teams, etc., are allowed access.

BIOS and Firmware Update

  • Visit the HP Support Assistant and check for any BIOS or firmware updates.
  • Sometimes, camera issues are resolved with firmware updates that improve hardware compatibility with newer Windows builds.

HP PC Hardware Diagnostics

  • Download and run the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics for Windows.
  • Use the Component Tests > Webcam to verify if the hardware is functioning correctly.

Temporary Workaround: Use Generic USB Video Device Driver

  • In Device Manager, right-click your camera → Update driverBrowse my computerLet me pick from a list.
  • Choose USB Video Device and install it. This is a generic driver that may restore basic functionality.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

@Max3Aj

I did step 1 and uninstalled grayed out drivers and restarted.

On step 2 for manually reinstalling, there is no camera driver listed for my model.

Step 3: I installed optional updates but none were camera related.
Step 4: privacy settings are all allowing.

Step 5: BIOS - HP Support Assistant does not show any available BOIS updates.

Step 6: See the picture below. This is what the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows 2.7.2.0 app responded with.

Step 7: Using generic USB video device driver...I went through that process and it didn't change anything.

I have two camera drivers listed: HP IR Camera 1FDE90C and HP True Vision 5MP Camera 1FDE90C. So i've tried updating both but not sure why there are two listed.
