HP Envy x360 15-dr1xxx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have HP Envy x360 15 inch model. Upon opening the laptop for the first time I noticed that the screen was flickering very violently. Took it to HP center, got it fixed. Then I decided to format the laptop, and the flickering came back again. I installed all windows updates and the flickering was gone - for good measure, I installed the new BIOS posted on the laptop's official HP site. I noticed though ever since then that there is some flickering that occurs when I sign in and it lasts for a couple of minutes, where the screen flickers / flashes slightly - most apparent on dark backgrounds.

Apparently it stops later after around 5-10 min, and the screen stabilizes - but sometimes I can swear the screen is flickering slightly (less apparently) in the background - this is not the main issue tho, the issue is the startup flickering that lasts 5-10 minutes during and after the sign in into windows account.

Lastly I noticed that the flickering does not occur upon restart - but rather the computer has to be sleeping or shutdown for a relatively long period -20 min or more, and no flickering occurs when using an external monitor.

please help me understand what is the problem!

@Kelr186 Here's what you need to do, to identify the issue and resolve it accordingly:

  • If not done already, check if it works fine on the BIOS screen to identify if it's either a hardware or a software issue:
    • If it works fine on the BIOS (Accessed while tapping F10 during a restart) it's a software issue & I suggest attaching an alternate monitor to your device and creating a new user account to check if that works better, for starters)
    • However, if it doesn't work within the BIOS either, I'm afraid it's a hardware malfunction.

While you respond to that, I have a few more steps that should help:

Perform a power reset (no data loss) using these steps: Click here, proceed to next step if this works

Attempt to run a test from the HP hardware diagnostic tool, using this link: Click here for details.

If the issue appears on the diagnostics, it could again, determine a hardware failure,

If they don't appear on bios & the hardware tests passed: please update the BIOS & Chip-set drivers from the HP website using this link: Click here

if the issue persists, reinstall windows using the recovery partition or the recovery media to fix the issue,
use this link for details on performing the recovery: Click here

I\First, thank you very much! This helped a lot!

OK, it is not a hardware issue....BIOS page has no flickering at all

I went back and disabled intel graphics driver and the flickering stopped. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it and will monitor the whole issue...do u think there is something wrong with windows installation?

@Kelr186

Thank you for the update.

It looks like an issue with the driver. I recommend you test the computer and let me know how it goes.

Cheers!

I updated the bios, updated the drivers, factory reset the laptop twice, clean reset the laptop now, and still there is flickering!!!!!!

I am extremely angry, it cost a lot to get this laptop, and now I have to be an external monitor to use it!

Plus the left hinge is crooked a bit!

I tested all hardware components, according to HP tests they're fine

i am really at a loss here!
