Spectre 15
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello all, I have a new HP Spectre 15 with a Intel 8750H processor and Nvidia GTX 1050ti graphics card. I want to watch 4k HDR videos on my TV (2019 Samsung that I know for a fact supports HDR). However, when I connect my TV using a HDMI cable that supports HDR, I can't get any HDR settings in Windows to work. My thoughts are that the HDMI port on my laptop is not 2.0. can anyone verify or offer suggestions to fix the problem? Thanks.

Hey there! @t_az,

Have you tried playing the videos using a different video player?

Have you tried using a different HDMI cable?

The TV you connecting the latop to should support 4K, only then you can watch 4K videos on the TV.

HDMI High Speed was introduced with 4k in mind. All HDMI cables that carry the HDMI High-Speed Logo do support the HDMI 2.0 Standard and can transmit ultra high resolutions with 2160p @ 24 Hz (=4k).

Full 4K support was introduced with HDMI version 1.4. However, you can only be sure with cables certified as "High Speed" to support the high bandwidth requirements of HDMI 2.0. Cables classified Version 1.3 mostly don't work for HDMI 4K functionality. The following list will give you a rough orientation.

  • HDMI cable 1.0 – 1.2 – no 4K Ultra HD support
  • HDMI cable 1.3: Probably no 4K support depending on the cable
  • HDMI cable 1.4: 4K support very likely, but not guaranteed
  • HDMI High Speed Cable: 4K Ultra HD support guaranteed

Hope this answers your query!

Have a great day! 🙂

So my problem isn't that I can't view 4k content. That is working fine. I can get 4k@60hz no problem. My problem is that I can't seem to view HDR content from my laptop to my TV. Like I said before, my TV is a brand new Samsung 4k HDR TV, so I know it is capable of HDR. Here are the cables I am using for reference.

Hi! @t_az,

Thanks for writing back to us.

Try the steps recommended below and check if it helps.

If your PC and display support HDR, turn it on to get started.

Select the Start button, then select Settings  > System  > Display .
If you have multiple displays connected to your PC, choose the HDR-capable display under Select and rearrange displays.
Select Windows HD Color settings.
Under Display capabilities, check to make sure it says Yes next to Play HDR games and apps.
Turn on Play HDR games and apps.
