Pavilion DV6 2140ed
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

By default, this pc has Windows 7 32 bit operating system preinstalled.

Then the harddrive failed and I replaced it with another one and installed Windows 7 x64 on it and installed the most recent updates.

Before installing anything else, I started with the chipset.

I then Googled all needed driver software such as video, audio, wireless, cardreader, acpi device drivers and downloaded them from the HP selfservice site and installed those, including the webcam (for that I used the newest version).

At first try all seem to work, including the webcam, I could even use the webcam with Skype.

That is until I fired the pc up the next day.

Nothing had changed since the previous day.

But the next day, after logging into the Windows 7 user account (admin) I found an unknown USB device with this code:

Port_#0005.Hub_#0003

code 43

In device manager I found that the webcam was gone.

So my next step is to uninstall all USB devices, disconnected devices such as the USB mouse, and reboot the system and all devices installed again but the webcam.

It does look like some kind of conflict in between the USB devices.

I also tried the Cyberlink youcam v6 with the HP webcam driver inside, but no luck there, so I uninstalled that software.

As it seems, this is a common issue but I didn't manage to solve the problem yet.

Who can help?

In device manager I uninstalled the videocard driver, the webcam audio splitter and the unknown USB device.

Then I rebooted the pc and logged in, now Windows recognised the unknown device being a webcam and reinstalled the audio and video device.

I needed to reboot Windows and all worked flawlessly ...

That is for about 15 minutes, then the unknown device popped up again.

Nothing has changed in between.

I suggest you download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/psg/p...

HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook

  1. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.

Click Updates in the My notebook pane

  2. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.

Updates list in HP Support Center

  3. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.

  4. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.

  5. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Also ensure Windows is up to date.

Thanks for your reply, your suggestion is a good one I already found and using it by myself.

Yet it did not bring the sollution I was expecting regarding the HP-Webcam splitter device.

As it seems, after I'd installed sp49996 a unknown USB device shows up.

Then in the device manager, in section for sound video and games, I'd found the HP-webcam splitter device installed, looking into the properties of the device, I found that it previously was installed as High definition audio device on Location 0 (Internal High Definition Audio-bus).

So I checked the properties of the other devices in that section for video, sound and games and found out that there's 2 devices that have the same properties.

So I thought of HP-webcam splitter device being an composite device to be configured on one of the High definition audio device on Location 0 (Internal High Definition Audio-bus).

Im my opinion, this means that something is missing.

So on the internet I found a package for the HP-Webcam, sp74820 with Cyberlink 6.0 and 282MB in size.

I then installed that package as well, after installation I had to reconfigure the other High definition audio device on Location 0 (Internal High Definition Audio-bus) into Cyberlink Webcam virtual driver 6.0.

Next I had to uninstall all USB devices, uninstall the NVidia GForce video adapter and reboot the pc.

After reboot, all devices are recognised and installed, no unknown USB devices left.

Instead, now there's another problem ... there's nog sound anymore after reconfiguring the High definition audio device on Location 0 (Internal High Definition Audio-bus).

Unfortunately, the support assistant does not have found any sollution for the HP-webcam splitter device on Windows 7 x64 on the HP Pavilion DV6 2140ed device laptop pc.

The webcam was found in device manager as HP Webcam.

Uninstall device didn't do the trick ... the unknown device kept popping up, it says 'port reset failed'.

Neither does removing all USB devices in section USB controllers and reboot the laptop.

These are the event reports of the unknown USB device:

At first glance it seems that installing the older driver (Cyberlink for HP) sp49996 did the trick, but only for a short time and then the webcam froze and the device popped up again as an unknown device undernead USB devices.

I'd checked the newest driver package but during setup it stays open and doesn't close when setup finishes.

So instead I downloaded yet another HP Cyberlink (older) larger driver package sp74820 (288MB)

In device section 'sound, video and game controllers' , I found 2 (audio) devices both with location 0, one of which is really an audio device and I suppose the other should be an video device.

The unknown USB device would therefor be the USB composite device, but I remain unable to find the HP USB composite device for the HP webcam device.

The thing is, when I updated the driver with the HP MediaSmart Webcam from sp49996 on 1 device, while the driver of the other device is updated with Cyberlink virtual device from sp74820.

Now the unknown device disappears (USB composite device) and the webcam appears again in device manager and stays longer.

Only now there's another problem, there's no audio anymore.

Why does this problem occur only in Windows 7 x64 whilst there's drivers available for x64, but no problems in x32 versions?
