I do not recommend these computers!!. Personally and business wise I have gone through 4 HP Pavilon dv7-6178 in a year and a half based on a replacement maintenance contract I purchased through Office Depot. Yes you heard that correctly 4 computers since Nov 2011!. Office Depot made comments and gave me bad nicknames and didn't want to talk to me! They blamed Facebook, etc.
The Video chips on these mother boards were/are all bad and heat up and crash!. There were other multipile problems i experienced. The last computer in this series I returned on July 1st, 2013. I did not know this was an on going problem that HP would or could not fix It has caused me many problems, loss of time, money, anxiety, job/sales loss, etc. They never fessed up to the problem and wanted to charge me more for fixing it. Many many issues, stay away from these dv7 models. [Content Removed] Oh I just found out that the local computer store independent uses these computers as parts in their grave yard sections but not the faulty parts of HP . Kelly

Ok - let me provide some feedback here. This is the second time it happens to me - DV7-7000. What triggered this? the automatic bios update. So, the system does upgrade the bios, and then shutdowns. Problem is that the only thing I see after is 1: blank screen 2: LED wireless on (orange). Nothing else. How did I fix it?
- disconnect power
- remove battery
- remove the cover on the back (one screew)
- disconnect hard drive, memory and CMOS battery
- hold the power on button for at least 60 seconds (saw some recommendations with 15 seconds that's not enough)
- then reconnect the power
In both cases, the screen goes back and then I see the BIOS being reprogrammed. Of course, at this stage the system does not find any OS. So power down. Reconnect HDD, CMOS battery. Put the cover back. Reconnect the battery and the power cable - system reboots.
There is definitely a problem with the process used to flash the BIOS during an upgrade as this is the second time it happens just after the BIOS upgrade is being automatically done.
Saw on youtube people removing everything and "bake" their systems in an oven. I may have a different problem, but before you start "baking" your system, try this couple of time.

Useirf,
Thank you for posting your solution. It is exactly what I needed. My son's computer (HP Pavilion dv7-3188cl) would boot up for around 10 minutes, then the screen would go blank and the LED wireless light would turn orange. Only thing to do was a hard boot. About a year ago, he had trouble with the fan and overheating, so I replaced the fan back then. Worked great for about 6 months, then started the blank screen thing. I thought maybe it was overheating again, but after installing CPUID HWMonitor and Core Temp programs, I wasn't getting any overly high temps reported. Was just about ready to try the oven refloat suggestion, and a modification to the fan casing to provide better airflow. Luckily I came across your suggestion before going into all of that.
Will try to insure the bios stay the same as they are now.
Thanks Again!!!

LEDs blink once: -CPU-CPU NOT FUNCTIONAL
LEDs blink twice: -BIOS-BIOS CORRUPTION
LEDs blink 3 times: -MEMORY-MEMORY NOT FUNCTIONAL
LEDs blink 4 times: -GRAPHICS-GRAPHICS CONTROLLER NOT FUNCTIONAL(GPU not funtional)
LEDs blink 5 times: -SYSTEM BOARD-GENERAL SYSTEM BOARD FAILURE
LEDs blink 6 times: -BIOS-BIOS AUTHENTICATION FAILURE
good luck but if you don't want to spend the money to fix it, all you have now is an expensive paperweight.

Do which part of what he said worked? I have same issue, lcd lights up like it's going to boot but no bios and can't see any text on pose screent no matter what I boot up as, Bios, F12 for boot options etc. but it worked yesterday so I think the monitor went out, I bought a nother lcs and replaced it and it's better because it lights up at least I just don't see anything on it, but I see caps lock when I triggers it, dvd drive lights when dics spinning, usb drives that are bootable lights when active etc but then it all stops and kind just sits there with not black scren but no text screen. I pulled all ram and battery and tried just power adapter etc. I can't believe this is dead when it worked the day before and it's an i7 intel model with nvidia so REALLY trying to fix it.. any thoughts? Ideas? what part of the person's who helped you'd tricks worked for you please? Thank you!!
