Hi I have HP Rechargeable MPP 2.0 Tilt Pen black one with no button on top, only 2 buttons on the side near the tip. I can charge the pen with orange light and waited till the color changes to white. Then I try to start the pen, with holding the bottom button for some time (tried 3s, 5s, 10s) and nothing is happening.
Is there a way to change the internal battery without destroying the pen? I am ok with repairing since its outside the warranty time, but need some guidance and tips to not end up destroying it.

Hi @Cheprer,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with a non-functional HP Rechargeable MPP 2.0 Tilt Pen despite it charging properly. While the pen shows it’s charging (with the light changing from orange to white), it’s possible that the internal battery might not be delivering power to the pen's electronics.
Before attempting repairs, a few things to try:
- Reset the pen: Some users have reported that holding down both side buttons for 7-10 seconds can reset the pen. Try this before attempting any hardware repair.
- Test with another device: Ensure that the issue is with the pen and not the device by testing it with another compatible HP laptop or tablet that supports the MPP (Microsoft Pen Protocol) standard.
- Check for firmware updates: Some HP pens and devices might have available firmware updates, which could resolve functionality issues. Make sure your device is up to date.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi @Alden4,
I've tried first steps, skipped second, did not get device to do firmware upgrade for 3rd step:
- Reset did nothing, also tried to start the pen afterwards, no response.
- Test with another device, I do not have another HP device compatible with this pen available, but since it is not responding I think there is no reason to try
- Tried connecting to the laptop using USB-C cable, no response on the device. Can you advice how to do update when you can't connect it? If not lets skip this step also. The pen worked like a year ago still, but was not used for some time. So I think FW is ok, but the battery is dead or something broke during manipulation with it.
Can you advise how can I try to do a hardware repair?

Hi @Cheprer,
Thank you for your response,
It sounds like your HP Rechargeable MPP 2.0 Tilt Pen is having trouble starting after being idle for some time, possibly due to a battery or hardware issue. Given your troubleshooting steps so far, here's what you can try next.
Check Battery Health
- Since the pen charges but does not start, the battery might have degraded over time. However, it may not be charging properly despite the charging light indicating otherwise.
- Try charging the pen for an extended period (a few hours to overnight) to ensure it's receiving a full charge.
- Check for battery calibration issues by trying to discharge the pen fully (if possible) and recharging it again.
Reset the Pen Again
- Hold the reset button for longer than usual (up to 10 seconds) to ensure the pen resets completely.
- If the pen has any LED indicators, see if there is a change in the light status during or after resetting.
Clean the USB-C Port
- Sometimes, dust or debris in the USB-C port can prevent the pen from charging or responding properly.
- Clean the port gently with compressed air or a soft brush to remove any dirt or blockage.
Test on a Different Device (if available)
- While you mentioned not having a compatible device, testing the pen on another device (even a friend’s HP device) could help determine if the issue lies with the pen itself or a connection problem with your laptop.
Try a Different USB-C Cable
- If the cable or port used to charge the pen is faulty, it may prevent proper communication or charging. Try a different cable or port to rule out this issue.
Pen Firmware Update
- If your laptop does not recognize the pen at all, it will be difficult to perform a firmware update directly. However, ensure that all drivers and firmware on your laptop are up to date, including the Windows Ink drivers that interact with the pen.
- If the pen becomes responsive later, follow the firmware update process for the pen from HP’s support page.

Perform a Hardware Inspection
- Disassemble the pen (if possible): If the pen is no longer under warranty and you're comfortable with hardware repairs, you can try carefully disassembling the pen to inspect the battery or internal components. There could be a loose connection or a damaged component inside.
- Check for visual damage: Look for any obvious signs of battery swelling or corrosion that could prevent the pen from working.
Replace the Battery
- If you suspect the battery is dead and you can access the battery compartment, try replacing the internal battery.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

I have tried the steps above and let it charge overnight, nothing changed.
Can you please advise how to dismantle the pen without breaking it? Maybe share a video or manual? I mean I understand the HW inspection, but that's after you dismantle it.
