Troubleshooting black screen issues on HP Notebooks: Click here to view the instructions!

Since my laptop does not have an HDMI port, I bought a highly-rated, Anker, usb-c port adapter to allow my laptop to connect projector HDMI cables. It did not work the two times I tried it with different video projectors. I tried the adapter in both usb-c ports on my Spectre model 14-ea1023, on the right side and corner. The other side has only a usb-a port. Can the usb-c ports connect to an HDMI cable through an adapter, or do I need to use an adapter from my usb-c port?

Thanks for any advice you can provide,

Robert

@rweintra, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

I understand that you're having trouble connecting your HP Spectre x360 14-ea1023 laptop to a projector via HDMI using a USB-C adapter. Generally, your laptop's USB-C ports should support video output, which allows for connection to HDMI via a compatible adapter. Here are a few things to consider:

USB-C Port Capabilities: Ensure that your USB-C to HDMI adapter supports video output and that your USB-C ports are capable of delivering video signal. USB-C ports on the HP Spectre x360 typically include support for DisplayPort over USB-C, which means they should be capable of transmitting video to an HDMI device through an appropriate adapter.

Adapter Compatibility: Check if the adapter is compatible with your laptop. Some USB-C to HDMI adapters might not be universally compatible with all devices. Make sure the adapter you have supports the required video output standards.

Projector Compatibility: Confirm that the projectors you are trying to connect with are properly set up to receive HDMI input. Ensure that the correct input source is selected on the projector.

Cable and Connection Integrity: Double-check that all cables are properly connected. Sometimes visual issues can be as simple as a loose connection.

Device Settings: Make sure your laptop's display settings are configured to extend or duplicate your screen onto the projector. Sometimes, this setting needs to be manually configured in the display settings on your laptop.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Thank you very much for your comprehensive reply. I will only know if your recommendations provided the solution when I next connect to a projector via its HDMI cable, which will be on November 9th. I'm hopeful. Thanks again, Robert

Hey HP Community,

The HP Spectre 14-ea1023 does support video output over USB-C, but only through ports that provide DisplayPort Alt Mode. Both USB-C ports on the right side of this model are typically capable of carrying video, so an adapter should work as long as it supports Alt Mode rather than relying on software-based conversion. If your Anker adapter failed with multiple projectors, it may not support the required video protocol, or there may be compatibility issues with certain displays. A USB-C to HDMI adapter that explicitly states support for 4K HDMI via DisplayPort Alt Mode, or a USB-C to HDMI cable certified for Alt Mode, is recommended. You do not need a different port, but you may need a different adapter that is fully compatible with USB-C video output on the Spectre.

Thanks for this!!

Thank you very much for your response. I ended up purchasing a different adapter and it worked fine. However, since I used it with a different projector, I can't tell if the original issue was caused by the adapter or the projector. In any event, so far so good. Thanks again, Robert

Greetings HP Community,

The HP Spectre 14-ea1023 is indeed capable of video output via USB-C, but this is only possible through ports that support DisplayPort Alt Mode. Typically, both USB-C ports located on the right side of this model can transmit video, so an adapter should function properly as long as it is compatible with Alt Mode instead of depending on software-based conversion. If your Anker adapter has not worked with several projectors, it might not support the necessary video protocol, or there could be compatibility issues with specific displays. It is advisable to use a USB-C to HDMI adapter that clearly indicates support for 4K HDMI through DisplayPort Alt Mode, or a USB-C to HDMI cable that is certified for Alt Mode. You do not require a different port; however, you may need an alternative adapter that is fully compatible with USB-C video output on the Spectre.

Thank you for this!!
