How do I fix the mouse pointer jumping around issue?  It does not happen often but it happens which is very annoying especially when I am in the middle of typing something.

The only way I have resolved it is but hard booting my computer.  After a couple of times, that is simply annoying too!

@SSMT

Welcome to the HP Forums, this is a great location to get assistance! I read your post and see that the are getting mouse jumping issue while typing. I would like to help you resolve this issue.

However, I will need a few details to provide an accurate solution,

  • When did this issue start?
  • Did you do any hardware or software changes?

Meanwhile

Check the Mouse options under control panel:

Start → Control Panel → Mouse → Buttons tab.

Check the box labeled "Use MS Office compatible scroll only."

Also, check the box below labeled "Scroll in active window only."

If the issue persists, attempt the below steps:

Attempt using an alternate/external mouse.

(If that works when the touchpad is disabled on Synaptic software, it would mean that it's a touchpad failure,

However, if the external mouse doesn't work either, it could be a software/driver issue).

Uninstall and reinstall the drivers for your mouse:

Go to the Device Manager and select your mouse. Uninstall it and then restart your computer. During restart, your mouse driver will automatically be reinstalled.

  • 1.   Click on Start and type ‘Device Manager’.

  • 2.   Click Device Manager.

  • 3.   Click + sign next to Mouse.

  • 4.   Right-click on mouse entry and choose "uninstall".

  • 5.   Restart your computer.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers.

This is maddening when it happens, because it is almost impossible to navigate a fix.  The touch screen is also affected.

My issue started right after an automatic windows 10 update.  Those are frustrating enough.

After restarting a few times with no positive result. I did the mouse/keypad driver reinstall, then another restart. (Try right clicking on the correct menu item when the keypad doesn't work and the cursor is jumping all over the screen!)  No luck.  Restarted again, no luck.

I turned the computer off, set it aside for an hour out of frustration, turned it on (booted) and the cursor works again.

I'm not sure if it is fixed, or if it will reappear.  It is working at the moment.

A day later the problem is back.  Ugh, frustrating.  It took me about 20 minutes to navigate back to this page.

I'll keep googling and trying stuff.

(Synaptics SMBus TouchPad driver)

Touchpad driver uninstalled.  Restarted twice.  Touchpad / cursor seems to be working again.

I was working on the patio during some of the troubles.  I read that maybe a breeze across / through the computer messes with the touchpad.  Could this be a thing?  Really?  I'm not sure, but right now I'm not going to move it from the kitchen table!

It's back. Ugh.  Indoors, no breeze.

I have HP ENVY x360 - 15m-bq121dx,  same issue, jumpy mouse cursor, even if not using, tried everything I could find in any forum.  Finally solved by disabling "stylus/pen" driver under device hardware.  Not a single jump since.

When I went into device manager, Human Interface Devices -->HID-compliant pen. That fixed it. I've tried updating, hard booting, bios updating, virus scanning, boot sector virus scanning, disabling the touch screen, disabing the touchpad, uninstalling the mouse drivers...

Nothing worked. So far, disabling the pen is actually the only thing that has worked for a while. I'll update this if the mouse jumping continues!
