HP Spectre x360 WIndows 11, bought in 2023 has a very low brightness level even at max brightness. I updated the BIOS and checked all power saving settings, etc. Any ideas what to do next?

Hi @EMguy,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Spectre x360 still has a very low brightness level even at max brightness after updating the BIOS and checking power-saving settings, you can try the following steps.

Check Graphics Driver

Update Graphics Drivers: Ensure your Intel or NVIDIA/AMD graphics drivers are up to date.

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand the Display Adapters section.
  3. Right-click your graphics card (Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD) and select Update driver.
  4. Select Search automatically for drivers.

Alternatively, visit the official Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD website to download the latest drivers.

Disable Auto-Brightness or Adaptive Brightness

Sometimes Windows or the graphics driver may adjust brightness automatically based on ambient light.

  1. Go to Settings > System > Display.
  2. Scroll down to Brightness and color.
  3. Turn off Change brightness automatically when lighting changes.

You can also check this setting in Intel Graphics Command Center or the NVIDIA Control Panel depending on your GPU.

Power Plan Settings

Check that the power plan is not limiting your brightness:

  1. Right-click the Battery icon on the taskbar and select Power Options.
  2. Select Change plan settings for your current plan.
  3. Select Change advanced power settings.
  4. Expand Display and ensure Display brightness is set to 100% for both plugged in and on battery.

Check Display Calibration

  • Open the Calibrate Display Color tool in Windows:
    1. Type Calibrate display color in the Windows search bar and open it.
    2. Follow the steps to ensure the color calibration isn’t affecting brightness.

Check for Firmware/Chipset Updates

Go to HP’s official support website and check if there are any firmware or chipset updates for your specific HP Spectre x360 model.

Revert to Previous BIOS/Driver Version

If the issue started after a recent BIOS or driver update, consider rolling back to the previous version.

  • For drivers: Open Device Manager > Right-click Display Adapters > Properties > Driver tab > Roll Back Driver.
  • For BIOS: Access the BIOS during boot and check if there’s an option to revert.

Check for Windows 11 Brightness Bugs

Windows 11 updates sometimes introduce bugs related to display settings. Ensure your Windows 11 installation is fully up to date by checking Windows Update.

Reset or Reinstall Graphics Drivers

  • You can use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to completely uninstall your graphics drivers and reinstall the latest versions from scratch.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
