HP Thunderbolt dock and Mac - two external monitors into dock, one works and shows up on the display settings, the other doesn't show (does turn on but only as a mirror of the other external)

Hi @JdallasKC,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP Thunderbolt Dock is working but is not fully supporting multiple external monitors on your Mac. This issue often stems from hardware or configuration limitations. Here's how to address it.
Check Dock and Display Capabilities
Dock Support for Multiple Displays:
- Verify that your HP Thunderbolt Dock supports dual monitor output with the specific Mac you're using. Some docks have limited support for macOS or specific port configurations.
Monitor Connection:
- Ensure both monitors are connected to the correct ports on the dock. Some docks designate specific ports for dual displays (e.g., one HDMI and one DisplayPort).
- Avoid daisy-chaining monitors unless explicitly supported by the dock.
Monitor and Cable Type:
- Use high-quality, compatible cables (e.g., HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.4, or USB-C depending on your monitors and dock). Incompatible cables can limit resolution or functionality.
macOS Configuration
Mirror vs. Extend Displays:
- Open System Settings > Displays.
- If one monitor is mirroring the other, deselect "Mirror Displays."
- Drag and rearrange displays to extend the desktop to both monitors.
Display Settings:
- Click on each monitor icon in System Settings > Displays to configure resolution and refresh rate.
- Confirm both displays are recognized individually.

Firmware and Software Updates
Dock Firmware:
- Visit the HP website to check for firmware updates for your Thunderbolt dock.
macOS Updates:
- Ensure your Mac is running the latest version of macOS. Display handling improves with updates.
Hardware Compatibility
- Some MacBooks, especially M1/M2 models, have native hardware limitations:
- M1/M2 Chips: Support only one external display natively (except M1 Pro, M1 Max, M2 Pro, and M2 Max).
- Workaround for M1/M2 Limitations:
- Use a DisplayLink adapter or docking station. DisplayLink docks and software allow more than one external monitor on these Macs.
Testing
Try Different Ports:
- Swap the monitor connections to different ports on the dock.
- Test each monitor individually to confirm both are functional.
Direct Connection:
- Connect one monitor directly to the Mac via a USB-C or HDMI adapter. If it works independently, the issue may be with the dock.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
