Hello,
My HP touch screen laptop (Model # 15-ef0023dx) has an issue where the display colors are "washed out" on startup. It appears others may have had this issue as well.
When turning on the machine, the colors are vibrant and clear. After a few minutes, it appears as though a faint white filter is over the screen making the colors appear less saturated. I have tried various possible solutions to get rid of it, such as calibrating the color, adjusting the resolution, and adjusting the "color filters" in settings. I have searched for updates to device drivers and found none. No approaches have worked. On external monitors, however, the colors are fine, so I suspect it may be a hardware issue. This is a problem because the white filter over the screen makes certain on-screen objects less visible and is difficult on the eyes in general.
Does anyone have any insight into this? Thanks in advance.

@athleticpenguin, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Have you tried connecting an external monitor and check if the issue persists?
In case of no external monitor available, let us check if the issue persists in safe mode.
-
Restart the computer.
-
At the first screen on restart, before the HP or Windows logo appears, press the f8 key repeatedly.
-
When prompted, select the Safe Mode with Networking option.
-
Check for the issue.
Now, restart the computer and let it boot normally.
Install updates using HP Support Assistant
- In the search box, type and open HP Support Assistant.
- Check for updates.
- If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.
Note: If you do not have HP Support Assistant installed, Click here to download the same.
Also, check for any pending windows update. Reboot the computer.
Let us run a video test
- Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
- Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
- Perform Component Test > video. Share the result on your next post.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hello Kumar0307,
So sorry for the late reply but thank you for the proposed solution!
To answer your questions:
I have connected my PC to an external monitor and the colors looked fine on it.
I also started up in safe mode, and I saw that the colors still appeared washed out (on the built-in display).
There were no updates available in the HP Support Assistant.
Component Test: I followed steps 1 and 2 but I was unable to access the Component Test option meaning I could not run a video test.
However: I believe have solved the problem by performing the following steps:
1. Open the Device Manager
2. Expand the "Monitors" item
3. Right-click "Generic PnP Monitor"
4. Select "Update Driver" from the context menu
5. Select "Browse my computer for driver software"
6. Select "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer"
7. In the selection box under "Model", ensure "Generic PnP Monitor" is selected
8. Click "Next"
9. Wait for the update.
Result: "Windows has successfully updated your drivers message" appears.
Afterwards, the colors seem to be restored and do not appear to "wash out" on subsequent start-ups.
Thanks for your help!
