HP Pavilion dv6-6165tx Entertainment Notebook PC
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Greetings everyone..

History:

I have an HP DV6 6165TX Laptop, which has Intel Core i7 2670qm Processor and AMD Radeon 6770M Graphics Card  and It Runs windows 7 x64 Perfectly. Sometime Back, It's Graphics card stopped working completely and the AMD Graphics driver shows Black screen, Meaning it was not showing any display when switched to AMD Graphics, But the intel HD 3000 Graphics driver was working fine, Giving me Basic 1366x766 Resolution and Aero Features, Even basic Games like CS Source.

I have also installed an SSD in place of the main drive Port, and My Main HDD is connected via a secondary DVD writer Port, as a caddy.

Recent Development:

Recently, I decided to Try Linux Mint, But it didn't go as well as I thought it would. I think Because of the Damaged Radeon Graphics card.  So I reverted back to windows 7.

Main Issues:

Now the main problems I am facing are as follows:

1. May Laptop HDD is not working Properly.  It doesn't show up in the system, and when connected via an external connector, It just Hangs and after so long time, it shows a drive that, according to windows, is not formatted properly, and does not even format(No drive Found). I searched for it and what I think is, Linux somehow changed its MBR or Boot partition and now windows is not detecting it, Neither formatting it. I am not able to recover my Data from it.

2. 2nd Problem is, My Usual Laptop drivers are not working with my laptop now. Specially, the Intel HD 3000 Graphics driver( Radeon Drivers don't work because of Damaged Graphics card). I have tried to download them again for My specific laptop model and x64 OS, But it always says "Your system does not have the minimum requirements", But it used to Run Properly Before Linux Install.

Kindly someone please help me with these issues.. Maybe I am missing something or doing something wrong. ANY help regarding these would be much appreciated.
Thanks in Advance

Best Regards.

Assign a Drive Letter:

  • If the drive appears but has no drive letter in Disk Management, assign one manually:
    • Right-click the partition > "Change Drive Letter and Paths" > Add.

Update Drivers

  • Ensure the Intel HD Graphics driver is updated if it’s related to the hang issue:
    1. Download the latest driver for your model from the HP support website or Intel's website.
    2. Install the driver in Windows and restart.

Test for System Stability

  • After these steps, test the drive’s functionality in Windows.
  • If the system still hangs, check for bad sectors or hardware issues with the drive using diagnostic tools like:
    • CrystalDiskInfo or HD Tune in Windows.
    • smartctl in Linux.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi @VimHarry,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like you're facing two main issues with your HP Pavilion dv6-6165tx Laptop after attempting to run Linux Mint. Let's break down both problems and their potential solutions.

HDD Not Working / Not Showing Up in Windows

This could indeed be caused by Linux altering the MBR (Master Boot Record) or partition table. Here's what you can try to resolve it:

Steps to Recover Your Data or Fix the HDD:

Use DiskPart to Clean the MBR:

  1. Press Windows + R, type cmd, and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open Command Prompt as an administrator.
  2. Type diskpart and press Enter.
  3. Type list disk to see all the connected drives.
  4. Identify the problematic drive (e.g., Disk 1, Disk 2).
  5. Type select disk X (replace X with the disk number you identified).
  6. Type clean to remove the MBR and partition data. (Warning: This will erase all data on the drive, so ensure you have backups if possible).
  7. After cleaning, create a new partition with create partition primary.
  8. Format the drive by typing format fs=ntfs quick and then assign.

Try Recovery Software: If you have important data on the drive that hasn't been backed up, you can use data recovery software like Recuva or EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard. They may be able to recover files even if the partition is unreadable.

Alternative Approach:

If you can't recover the data, you may need to use a bootable USB drive to access Linux utilities or Windows Recovery to repair the disk.

Intel HD Graphics Driver Issue

The issue where your system is not accepting the Intel HD 3000 driver could be due to several reasons, especially after the Linux Mint installation. Here's how to troubleshoot it:

Steps to Resolve the Graphics Driver Issue:

Check Device Manager:

  1. Right-click on Computer > Manage > Device Manager.
  2. Expand the Display Adapters section. If there’s a yellow triangle next to the Intel HD Graphics or it’s showing an error, try updating or reinstalling the driver.

Manually Install Intel HD 3000 Drivers:

  1. Uninstall the Existing Intel Graphics Driver: In Device Manager, right-click on Intel HD Graphics and select Uninstall. Check "Delete the driver software for this device" if prompted.
  2. Install the Correct Driver: Download the correct Intel HD 3000 driver from the Intel website or from HP's support page for your laptop model.
  3. After installation, restart your laptop.

Use Compatibility Mode: If the system says "Your system does not meet the minimum requirements," you can try installing the driver in compatibility mode:

  1. Right-click the downloaded driver setup file.
  2. Select Properties > Compatibility.
  3. Check Run this program in compatibility mode for and select Windows 7.
  4. Run the installer again.

Check for Windows Updates: Ensure that all Windows updates are installed, as these may include important fixes for hardware drivers.

Revert Changes from Linux: If you suspect the issue is due to Linux modifications, running a System Restore to a point before you installed Linux might resolve it. To do so:

  1. Type rstrui in the Start menu search box.
  2. Select Create a restore point and then System Restore.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the Linux installation.

Note:

If none of the above solutions work, you might consider reinstalling Windows 7 completely (after backing up your data) to ensure that all drivers are correctly installed from scratch.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you Alden4 for the support.

1. I have tried to install the driver in compatibility mode. Still the same error occurs..

2. I do not have a Restore point prior to installing Linux Mint. I have formatted my Bootable SSD and have installed windows 7 on it again.  These Issues only have started to occur after I have Re-installed Windows 7.

But I will try to run the other fixes you have provided and see How it goes..

Thank you for your Help and support..

Cheers 🙂

Greetings Alden4

Apologies for the delayed reply..

So as you know I had two issues with my laptop.. Intel Graphics Driver not working and HDD not showing up for any operations.

I am glad to let you know that My Graphics driver issue has been resolved. It turns Out I was using a wrong driver. With some trial and error, I finally found a compatible x64 driver and it worked just fine.

The 2nd issue persists however.. I am not able to get my HDD to show up in windows to do any sort of Operations on it. It just Hangs up the system and after a long time.. shows the driver letters with no data and no ability to run any commands.

I tried to connect it via an external HDD connector to some other PC, But same results..

I had some luck with a disk management software and it managed to show me So many Bad sectors but Could not format the Drive.. I am somehow suspicious that Linux OS has changed something in the drive and now it won't show up in windows .

I am just out of ideas as to how do I get it working in windows and try to Retrieve my data from it..

Any Ideas and help from you or anybody would be much appreciated..
Thank you all in advance. I hope I can resolve this with some help and support..

Hi @VimHarry,

Thank you for your response,

I'm glad to hear that your graphics driver issue is resolved!

As for the HDD issue, it sounds like your drive might have serious physical damage or a failing internal component, given the presence of many bad sectors. Here's a plan to try and recover your data or at least diagnose further:

Check Disk Health Using Third-Party Tools: Since disk management software showed many bad sectors, you can try using tools like CrystalDiskInfo or HD Tune to get more detailed information about the health of the disk. These tools will often show if the drive is in a state where recovery is unlikely due to hardware failure.

Try Data Recovery Software: If the disk is still somewhat functional, there are data recovery tools you can try:

  • Recuva (free, for basic recovery)
  • EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard (offers a trial version with a limited amount of recoverable data)
  • R-Studio (more advanced, works on drives with physical damage but may be a bit complex) These tools may be able to retrieve some or all of your data by scanning for remnants of files even if they are in bad sectors.

Attempt Disk Repair (Chkdsk Command): Running chkdsk might help in case the filesystem is corrupted but not physically damaged:

  • Open a Command Prompt as Administrator.
  • Type chkdsk X: /f (replace "X" with the letter of the affected drive).
  • This command can fix some logical errors, though it may not help with bad sectors.

Try Linux Live USB: Booting into Linux via a USB stick (using a tool like Ubuntu or Linux Mint) might help you access the drive in a different way. Linux often handles drives with bad sectors more gracefully than Windows, and you might be able to copy your important files off the drive before it completely fails.

Test the Drive with Another Cable/Port: Sometimes a faulty cable or port can cause issues with reading a drive. If you haven’t already, test the drive with different cables and on different computers or ports to rule out connection problems.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
