I have an external monitor connected to my laptop's micro hdmi port. After I'm done using the computer, I put it to sleep, and then when I want to use it again, when I hit the power button on the laptop, neither screen comes on. I have to unplug the hdmi cable - at which point the laptop screen comes on - and then plug the hdmi cable back in - at which point the external monitor comes on. The f4 key will turn the laptop screen back on ONLY if I was away from the computer for a short enough time that I don't have to log back in.
Is there anything I can do to avoid having to unplug and replug the hdmi cable?

I picked up an iogear usb-c docking station with vga and hdmi outputs, and I found out that it does not work with my computer. Apparently it doesn't have the display port alt mode or whatever. So there's another device available: the j5create usb 3.0 docking station with vga and hdmi outputs. Has anyone tried something like that when usb-c wasn't an option for you? IF YOU TRIED IT, I was wondering (1) did it slow down the computer (in terms of apps running slow), and (2) was there lag between, for example, moving the mouse and seeing it moving on the external monitor?

Welcome to HP Support Forums. A really great platform for posting all your questions and finding solutions.
I understand that you are unable to wake the external monitor back from sleep mode.
I'll try my best to help.
May I know since when are you facing this issue?
I suggest you update the Graphics driver from Device Manager
- Select the Start button, type Device Manager, and select it from the list of results.
- Look for Display Adapters and expand the List
- Look for Graphics Driver then right-click it, and select Update Driver.
- Select Search automatically for updated driver software.
- If Windows doesn't find a new driver, you can try looking for one on the device manufacturer's website and follow their instructions.
- If these steps don't work, try reinstalling the driver: Open Device Manager, right-click the Graphics driver and select Uninstall. Restart your PC and Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.
