I have struggled with the AMD Radeon graphics driver.  When installed I get frequent BSOD, most IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL ZERO but also UNEXPECTED KERNEL MODE TRAP.  If I uninstall the AMD graphics driver and use the default Microsoft Basic Display Adaptor I have no BSOD problems but laptop functionality and display quality is quite limited.

It's clear there is an issue with the AMD driver.  Can anyone help me find a solution?  Thanks very much.

Are you installing the driver from a download from HP? Or are you downloading it from elsewhere -- like the AMD site? If the latter, that is a BAD idea and generally will not work.

Hi, thanks for replying.  Yes, I downloaded the Adrenaline package from the AMD site and installed just the graphics driver.  It's been a while since this whole thing started.  I want to say that I ended up there via HP support but I could be way off on that.

The AMD drivers from their sites tend to work better on desktops because those have more generic GPUs.  With laptops, you have more customized GPUs and while the drivers sometimes work, they don't always.  When Switchable Graphics was all the rage, folks downloaded from AMD all the time -- and this caused many problems.  But with the more modern GPUs, and with CPUs with built-graphics, like the Ryzen chips, I would think this would be less of a problem.  But you're always safe with using the drivers from HP.

AMS has a downloadable app that will scan your GPU and then download the proper drivers from the AMD site.  You should try using that.

I took your advice and used the HP site to download the drivers.  I know I had tried that once before and it didn't work (hence my attempts with the AMD site).  I think I bailed because I stepped down to Windows 10 from Windows 11 and HP didn't offer drivers for Windows 10 on my computer.  But.... I installed anyway this time and everything seems to be working well.  I did have one restart that I can't account for but otherwise it's been two days and everything is far more stable.  Hopefully it lasts....

Thanks for steering me in the right direction!

Good to see that worked.
