Just bought a new laptop with touchscreen. I wish to play the NY times game Vertex. This involves touch a circle on the screen and selecting another which if correct draws a line. On the new laptop all that happens is the circles change color

@Peggylgb Welcome to HP Community!
I understand that you would like to draw on touchscreen without pen
Setting up a PC to use the touch screen feature
Some HP Notebook PCs are equipped with a touch screen that allows you to control the PC and input text by writing on the screen with a fingertip or a stylus which is a special non-ink pen. By teaching the PC to recognize your handwriting, you can input information without using the standard keyboard and mouse. You may be familiar with a similar input device that is used in stores to record your signature for purchases.
The handwriting recognition and touch screen command features are available only on notebook tablet PCs with the special touch screen LCD panel. For convenient use, the lid on HP tablets can be opened and rotated to cover the keyboard. The image on the screen can be rotated so that any side can be positioned as "up" for easier viewing. The pen can be used to "tap" items on the screen to open programs and enter commands. The handwriting recognition function allows you to "write" on the screen instead of using the standard keyboard.
Before you can use these features, the PC must be set up to recognize your actions. All of the recognition features are associated with your individual user name and logon. If multiple people use the same tablet notebook PC, each person must have a user name and logon, and each person must perform the following procedures to set up the PC.
-
Select the desired orientation of the screen
-
Calibrate the screen
-
Enable handwriting personalization
-
Train the handwriting recognition function
-
Select an input pad
For your convenience, an interactive Tablet PC Pen Training program is available on the PC by clicking, or tapping, Start > All Programs > Table PC > Tablet PC Pen Training.
Select the desired orientation of the screen
The lid of the LCD screen can be rotated into several positions. The default orientation of the image on the screen is a horizontal landscape view. This is the same orientation, relative to the keyboard, as when the PC is set on a desktop. If the lid is rotated over the keyboard and the PC is held on your arm like a clipboard, the image needs to be rotated to the vertical portrait view.
To rotate the image, press the screen image rotation button , located on the edge of the screen.
Calibrate the touch screen
The command buttons and fields are displayed on the screen image at specific pixel points. To initiate a response, the touch screen interface needs to recognize exactly where a fingertip or pen touches the screen relative to the pixel position of the display. Each person has a slightly different hand-eye coordination response. Calibrating the touch screen allows the interface to compensate between where the program is expecting a touch and where the touch actually occurs.
To calibrate the touch screen, place the tablet notebook in the desired orientation and do the following actions.
-
Click or tap Start > Control Panel > Tablet PC Settings to open the Table PC Settings window.
-
On the General tab, select the option to display the menus in either the Right-handed or Left-handed position.
-
On the General tab, select the desired screen orientation from the drop-down menu, and click or tap Calibrate.
Follow the instruction to touch the screen at the specified points.
Repeat this calibration action for all four of the screen orientations, then click or tap Apply.
-
On the Handwriting Recognition tab, select the Use the handwriting personalization option.
-
At a later time, you can return to review the Go to Pen and Input Devices and Go to Input Panel Settings options to make using the touch screen to control programs and input text easier and more accurate.
Enable handwriting personalization
The handwriting personalization function can be turned on or off. One of the steps that should be performed in calibrating the touch screen is to enable the function as follows.
-
Click or tap Start > Control Panel > Tablet PC Settings to open the Table PC Settings window.
-
On the Handwriting Recognition tab, select the Use the handwriting personalization option.
-
Click or tap Ok to enable the handwriting personalization function.
Provide writing samples to train the handwriting recognition function
To teach the program to recognize your handwriting, use the stylus to do the following actions.
-
Using the pen stylus, tap Start > All programs.
-
Place the pen on the vertical scroll bar and slide the bar down to view all of the listing.
-
Tap Tablet PC, and then tap Personalize handwriting recognition to open the Handwriting Personalization window.
- Tap the Teach the recognizer your handwriting style option.
-
Select Sentences for the most complete recognition procedure. Suggested for those with some experience using the pen stylus.
-
Select Numbers, symbols, and letters for the initial recognition procedure. Introduces you to entering simple text and commands.
-
-
Follow the instructions to teach the recognized your handwriting style.
As you become more comfortable using the stylus, your handwriting will change slightly. You may want to repeat the recognition process periodically.
NOTE:The touch screen works best if only the stylus, and not your hand, is touching the screen. If you rest the palm of your hand on the screen for comfort, you will have to press the pen more firmly onto the screen.
Select an input pad
Once the handwriting recognition function is set up, you can select different types of input pads to enter a command value or text using your fingertip or a stylus. When you select a function that requires input, such as performing a search, the input device icon is displayed on the screen.
Double-tap the input device icon to open an input pad.
