Hi, I have a Hp Pavilion x360 laptop and just bought a Hp Active Gen 2 pen from CEX but it is not working. It connects to the laptop through Bluetooth and when I press the eraser button, one note opens but that's it. It doesn't draw on the screen or anything and the side buttons don't work. Is there something I'm doing wrong or should I take it back to CEX? Thanks

@bokelsu1, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP Pavilion x360 is experiencing issues with the pen's tip and side buttons not functioning properly, while the Bluetooth connection and shortcut buttons are working. This usually indicates a compatibility issue rather than a fault with the pen itself. Let’s go through a quick checklist to confirm the situation:

1. Is Your Pavilion x360 Digitizer Active Pen-Compatible?

HP Pavilion x360 models come in various configurations, and not all support Active Pen input (Microsoft Pen Protocol / MPP). Some only support basic capacitive touch.

  • Find Your Model Number:
    • Press Windows + R, type msinfo32, and press Enter.
    • Look for System Model.

2. Check Windows Pen Input Settings

If your model supports active pen input, check the following settings:

  1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Pen & Windows Ink.
  2. Ensure “Ignore touch input when I’m using my pen” is enabled.
  3. Try using applications like Microsoft Whiteboard, Paint 3D, or Sketchpad instead of just OneNote, as some apps may behave differently.

3. Drivers & Firmware

  1. Open Device Manager and expand Human Interface Devices.
  2. Look for HID-compliant pen or Intel Precise Touch Device.
    • If missing or showing a yellow triangle, you may need to:
      • Update your graphics driver and touchscreen firmware.
      • Download the latest drivers from your HP model’s support page.

4. Quick Hardware Check

Try these steps:

  1. Remove the battery from the pen (if applicable) and reseat it.
  2. Test the pen on another HP laptop that supports MPP (if available).
  3. Use your finger to draw on the screen:
    • If finger touch works but the pen doesn’t register at all, it indicates a compatibility issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
