Hi @Pink143,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your laptop’s touchpad is not working properly and is causing issues such as highlighting words, replacing large text blocks, and inserting numbers incorrectly. Let’s go through a few steps to troubleshoot and narrow down what could be causing this.

Check for External Devices

Disconnect any external mouse, keyboard, or USB device.

Restart the laptop and test the touchpad again. Sometimes external devices can interfere with touchpad input.

Touchpad Enable/Disable Function

On many laptops, the touchpad can be disabled accidentally with a function key (Fn + F6/F7/F9 depending on your model).

Look for a touchpad symbol on your keyboard and press Fn + [that key] to re-enable it.

Update/Reinstall Touchpad Drivers

Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.

Expand Mice and other pointing devices.

Right-click on the touchpad device (e.g., Synaptics, ELAN, Precision Touchpad) and select Update driver.

If that doesn’t help, choose Uninstall device, then restart your laptop. Windows will reinstall the default driver.

Check Touchpad Settings in Windows

Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.

Ensure the touchpad toggle is turned On.

Adjust sensitivity (set to Medium or Low) to prevent accidental highlighting.

Run Windows Troubleshooter

Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.

Run the Keyboard and Hardware & Devices troubleshooters.

Check for System Updates

Go to Settings > Windows Update.

Install all pending updates, as they often include driver fixes.

Test in Safe Mode

Restart your laptop and boot into Safe Mode.

If the touchpad works normally in Safe Mode, the issue could be caused by conflicting software or third-party apps (such as Copilot or extensions).

I hope this helps.
