Hi @Christian990999

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're trying to access the BIOS on your HP laptop with a broken screen, but you're using an external monitor, and it doesn't automatically display the BIOS or boot menu with the lid closed. Here’s how you can work around this issue and try to boot into the BIOS or enable Secure Boot:

Step 1: Try an External Monitor (With Lid Closed)

First, let’s make sure the external monitor is set as the primary display when booting:

  1. Shut down the laptop completely.
  2. Close the lid to prevent the laptop’s internal screen from being used.
  3. Connect the external monitor to the laptop.
  4. Turn on the laptop and repeatedly press the BIOS access key (for HP laptops, this is usually Esc, F10, or F2) right after pressing the power button.

In most cases, the external monitor should display the BIOS screen if it is connected and active during boot. However, if the laptop is still not showing the BIOS on the external screen, try this next step.

Step 2: Use the HP Hotkey (Esc or F10)

Since you can’t see anything on the laptop screen, you’ll need to time the keystrokes correctly:

Turn off the laptop completely (power it down).

With the laptop powered off, turn it back on and immediately begin pressing the Esc key repeatedly, once per second, to access the HP Startup Menu. If this doesn't work, try pressing F10 (sometimes F2 for HP) instead.

  • Esc should open a startup menu with options like entering BIOS (F10), Boot Device options, etc.
  • If you get into the BIOS screen, you can enable Secure Boot from the Boot options or Security tab.

If you successfully see the Startup Menu on the external monitor, you can select F10 to enter the BIOS settings.

Step 3: Enabling Secure Boot in BIOS

Once you're in the BIOS, follow these steps to enable Secure Boot:

  1. Navigate to the Security tab (or Boot tab in some models).
  2. Look for the Secure Boot option and set it to Enabled.
  3. Save your changes and exit the BIOS (usually F10 to save and exit).

Step 4: Resetting BIOS (if needed)

If you're unable to access the BIOS due to a hidden or inaccessible option, you might want to try resetting the BIOS settings to default:

  1. Power off the laptop completely.
  2. Remove the battery (if possible) and disconnect the power adapter.
  3. Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds to drain any residual power.
  4. Reconnect the battery and adapter, then power on and try accessing BIOS again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
