HP ENVY x360 - 15t-dr100 CTO

The screen brightness does not respond to the keystrokes that should increase brightness.
Has anyone encountered this?
Does this mean that I need a new monitor?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi @leo-iii

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds frustrating that your HP ENVY x360 screen brightness is stuck on a low setting, especially when the brightness keys aren't working. Before jumping to the conclusion that the monitor itself is the problem, there are a few potential fixes you can try. Let's go through some steps to troubleshoot the issue.

1. Check the Keyboard Shortcuts

  • Make sure you’re using the correct keyboard shortcuts for brightness adjustment:
    • Fn + F2 or Fn + F3 (usually marked with a sun symbol) to decrease or increase brightness.
    • Caps Lock: Ensure that Caps Lock is not on, as it can sometimes interfere with keyboard shortcuts.

2. Update Graphics Drivers

  • Outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can cause issues with screen brightness control. Follow these steps to check for updates:
    1. Right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager.
    2. Expand Display adapters, then right-click your graphics card and choose Update driver.
    3. Select Search automatically for updated driver software and follow the prompts.
    4. Restart your laptop after updating the drivers.

3. Adjust Brightness in Windows Settings

  • If the keyboard shortcuts aren’t working, you can manually adjust brightness through the Windows Settings:
    1. Go to Settings > System > Display.
    2. Under the Brightness and color section, use the Change brightness slider to adjust the brightness. If the slider is missing or grayed out, this might indicate an issue with the display driver or settings.

4. Check Power Settings

  • Power settings can also affect screen brightness:
    1. Open Control Panel and go to Power Options.
    2. Click on Change plan settings next to your selected power plan.
    3. Click on Change advanced power settings.
    4. Expand the Display section, then expand Enable adaptive brightness and ensure that it is set to Off for both On battery and Plugged in.

5. Disable Adaptive Brightness

Sometimes, Windows tries to automatically adjust your brightness based on ambient light. This can cause issues:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Change Plan Settings.
  2. Click on Change advanced power settings.
  3. Expand Display, then Enable adaptive brightness and set it to Off.

6. Use the HP Support Assistant

If the issue persists, use the HP Support Assistant tool to diagnose and fix the issue.

I hope this helps.

Hi Sneha,

Thank you for your comprehensive response.  I have tried everything except the Support Assistant.  So far the problem remains.  There are two external monitors connected, so my next step is to disconnect them and see if the freestanding notebook functions normally.  If not, then I'll use the Support Assistant and, if necessary, I'll follow up on the warranty.

Kudos to you in any event.  I appreciate the effort that you have put into this and following up with my lazy bones.

Regards.
