"I2C HID Device cannot start (Code 10) with HID descriptor failure."

I have tried using driver updates but came back with me already having latest, cannot do rollbacks, and tried uninstalling it then restart computer to install it automatically yet error still persists. My touchpad is kind of weird, it occasionally work, and when I say occasionally I mean 1 in 3 months (or more) chance for it to work again then after shutdown, it fails again. I was having this problem since 1 in half years ago, and I really got annoyed about only this year.

I have listed down below what I copied from the properties of 12 C HID Device on device manager:

Hi @jetflip09

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with an issue where your I2C HID Device (which controls the touchpad) is failing to start properly due to a Code 10 error. This is often caused by either a problem with the driver, hardware, or system configuration. Since the error mentions "A request for the HID descriptor failed," it suggests that Windows is having trouble properly identifying or initializing the touchpad hardware.

Here are some detailed troubleshooting steps to help you fix the I2C HID Device cannot start (Code 10) error:

1. Check for Windows Updates

Sometimes, a Windows update can resolve underlying issues with drivers, especially if the issue is related to system files or the touchpad driver.

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  • Click Check for Updates and install any available updates. Restart your computer afterward.

2. Reinstall the Touchpad Driver

It sounds like you’ve already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver, but let’s try a more thorough approach:

  1. Uninstall the Touchpad Driver Again:
    • Open Device Manager.
    • Find I2C HID Device under Human Interface Devices (it should show up as "I2C HID Device" or something similar).
    • Right-click on it and select Uninstall device.
    • Check the box for Delete the driver software for this device if available.
    • Restart your computer and let Windows attempt to reinstall the driver automatically.
  2. Install the Latest Driver from the Manufacturer’s Website:
    • If Windows installs the default driver (Microsoft), but it's not working properly, you may want to go to the manufacturer’s website for your laptop (e.g., HP, Dell, Lenovo) and download the latest touchpad driver (often called something like "Synaptics" or "ELAN").
    • Install the driver and restart your computer.

3. Update the Intel Serial IO Driver

The error also mentions the Intel Serial IO I2C Host Controller, which is responsible for handling communication with I2C devices like your touchpad. If this driver is outdated or corrupted, it could be causing the issue.

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand System Devices and find Intel(R) Serial IO I2C Host Controller.
  3. Right-click on it and select Update driver.
  4. Select Search automatically for updated driver software.
  5. If Windows finds an updated driver, let it install and restart the computer.

If Windows doesn’t find an update, you can visit the Intel website and search for the latest Intel Serial IO driver for your specific laptop model and install it manually.

4. Disable Power Management for the I2C Device

Power management settings can sometimes cause hardware devices like the touchpad to fail, especially after a restart or shutdown.

  1. Open Device Manager and find your I2C HID Device under Human Interface Devices.
  2. Right-click it and select Properties.
  3. Go to the Power Management tab (if available).
  4. Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
  5. Click OK and restart your computer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hey @Rachel571,

Thank you for your time but none you mentioned worked, but lately i found a way (not guranteed) to fix it temporarily. I went to device manager went to I2c HID Device driver then updated the browse my computer then let me choose and it came with a list for the driver, turned on compatible mode and then pressed I2c HID Driver then it works but I am not sure if it would last.

Regards,

Jet
