The Intel 620 is more than powerful enough to drive an external 4K monitor. Give us the model number of the screen and we can try to figure out what it is trying to say as far as the minimum video card. I strongly suggest you use a usb-C to DP dongle and then DP to the monitor rather than HDMI.

The LG model is 27UD69P. The HDMI to USB C adaptor can be used for my tv so I will order the DP to USB C adaptor as you suggest. I am an old geezer that loves all the new technology. I am still amazed though how much you can learn by searching the net. I did look up the graphics card and what I learned gave me total confidence that the Spectre can output 4k, it is now just a matter of matching it with the right cable and monitor.
Again thanks for your help, it is very much appreciated - Gary

I guess there is a short window to edit posts. Hopefully this will work. HP Spectre is not listed as one of the supported models but not sure if that means anything.
I am hoping the hdmi to usb c doggle will work for my samsung tv. I was able to project to my monitor using the hub I purchased but could not get any sound. I know my settings were ok so I am pretty sure it was the connection. I hope I do not have the same issue with the tv. I will soon find out.

Yes I have one of those. They also make a much shorter USB-C to DP female dongle and then you use a DP male to male cable to complete the connection. That is a full-length one-piece cable and would be fine if you don't need to pack up the adapter and take it with you but just use it in one place.

I actually bought a 4' display port to USB C cable. It was only a few bucks more than an adaptor, I should receive it Friday and will let you know if it works. On the road my laptop screen will be fine. I will mainly use the external monitor for video and photo editing and for my bookkeeping work.
I do spend 20 hours a week at a clients place of business and use a cheap external monitor for Quickbooks which is fine. For that I would use the hdmi to usb c adaptor I just bought (should receive that today).

I received my Trendnet TUC-HDMI adaptor and thought it was not going to work. But I was on duplicate screen so when I went to right click on the desktop (of course it is actually doing it on laptop) I could not get more than 1920x1080. When I had the external monitor set as the monitor the icons got smaller so I new I had 4k.
I do still have a problem as I cannot get sound. I have the monitor set as the sound source and when doing the test it appears there is a sound signal, I just can't hear anything. I did order a display port to usb-c cable so maybe that will fix the problem. But I am halfway there. The specs for the adaptor state to view a computer hdtv display up to 3840x2160 resolution at 30 hz. The cable I should get in a couple of days is for 60 hz.
So I know I get get 4k from the laptop, now have to figure out how to get sound and as I said maybe the cable will be the answer. I am planning on using the adaptor for the Spectre connected to the tv.
Ok, hooked it up to tv and works well, I get sound. I can see a problem though down the road. I think the connection can get loose eventually. I had this problem with a mini display port connection. The larger hdmi just fits more securely but I understand the logistics and HP is tryping to offer multiple ports on a very thin machine.
