I'm getting severe lines & garbage on my HP Spectre x360 display. This mainly happens on waking up after laptop is asleep. This problem does not occur on external displays which are plugged in, but persists on the main laptop display. See video: https://imgur.com/a/yM9cFgj
The display lines are not static: if I open windows settings with Windows+I the display lines go from mainly dark to mainly white. Once or twice this has solved the problem until the next occurrence. It often goes away after 10-30 mins or prolonged shut down (overnight).
The start of this problem approximately coincided with updating the system to Windows 10 version 2004. Updating to version 20H2 has not impacted the problem.
Specs:
HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-bl0XX
Product number 1EL88UA#ABL
BIOS F.42
Windows 10 Home 64-bit Version: 19042.804 (fully up to date)
Graphic Device 1: Intel(R) HD Graphics 620 3840 x 2160
22.20.16.4836 (2017-10-17) (HP recommended driver)
Graphic Device 2: NVIDIA GeForce 940MX 3840 x 2160
27.21.14.6140 (2021-01-22) (fully up to date)
Here are steps I have unsuccessfully tried to make the problem go away:
- Power plugged in/unplugged
- Closed & opened lid
- Shut down and restart (after shut down/restart, artifacts of previously open screens are visible through lines)
- Disable Fast Startup in windows settings
- Set refresh rate to 40p Hz in Intel HD Graphics Control Panel
- Changing brightness
Any advice greatly appreciated!

This kind of video problem is strictly hardware -- so all the settings and software stuff you did would do nothing to correct it.
It's either the screen or the video chip or both -- but since you have an external monitor connected, that rules out the video chip.
You would need to get the screen replaced -- which is not simple or cheap.
We are not able, or permitted, to provide any repair estimates or equipment prices.
For this information, you would need to contact an HP Repair or Service Center.
Since you live outside the U.S., here is a link to HP Service Centers, by Country/Region: https://support.hp.com/us-en/service-center
If that link does not provide you sufficient information, then use the main HP link:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/contact-hp?openCLC=true
I've found those links to be unreliable if you're using Win10 and the new Edge Browser; so if you are, you need to use something else, like FireFox.
Good Luck

@WAWood thanks for your response! When I switch back to 60 Hz refresh rate in the Intel Graphics Settings app, the issue immediately reoccurs. It also reoccurs if I unplug the HDMI cable going to the external display. Would this happen if it's a screen issue as you suggest?
