Yea, unfortunately you cannot assign a key to open the tray. You can only make a shortcut through an icon.

Sorry.

Well don't keep it a secret, how do I create a desktop icon that I can associate to open the CD drawer?

Many thanks for your tip. I have a Toshiba Satelite C5o on which the cd drive is a sod to open.

I used your tip, put a shortcut on the desktop and "Hey-presto" a double click and we're swingin.

Not quite true.  I had a wonderful Logitech keyboard that had a key for opening/closing the tray.  However, it took a coffee break - sigh.  I replaced it with a Microsoft Wave keyboard.  I didn't discover that it didn't have that key until after I purchased it, sigh.

Published answer begins with "Click the Start Menu", but Windows 8 has no such thing.  I have found a way via the keyboard of ejecting the CD before, but didn't write it down, and have spent 15 minutes so far trying to rediscover it.
