Troubleshooting black screen issues on HP Notebooks: Click here to view the instructions!
HP Recommended

Hi!

I recently got a brand new HP EliteBook 840 11-inch G11 laptop, running Windows 11 Enterprise.

When connecting it to my Dell D6000 USB-C docking station, which is connected to two Dell U2715H 27" inch displays running on 2560x1440@60Hz resolution through the two DisplayPort connections, the following strange behavior is experienced:

- The screens are identified in Windows as two external screens, and turns on when I connect the PC to the docking station. I can both duplicate and extend to these, and they show up in the Display set-up panel in Windows.

- However, I do only see the mouse cursor when I move my mouse over to the other screen, the rest of the screen is black.

The docking station has worked perfectly with my older HP notebook running Win10, as well as my MacBook Pro. We have tested my notebook on other HP USB-C docking stations, which works flawlessly. I have also tested my notebook and the Dell docking station with other screens, and the same think happens.

Other things tried:

- Drivers reinstalled

- Firmware on USB-C docking station updated

- BIOS updated

- Win11 re-imaged

- Activated "High Resolution mode when connected to a USB-C DP alt mode dock" in BIOS

- Tried to set "Do nothing" when closing the lid, and closed it - without any changes

Another strange behavior is the following:

- While the two Dell screens are connected to the docking station: if I connect one of the Dell screens with HDMI cable to the third display port on the docking station - this screen connects and are able to show the picture correct (and are recognized as a fourth screen in Windows, in addition to the main notebook screen and the two connected on Displayport. If I then remove one of the displayport cables, the HDMI screen dropps out...

The screen works perfectly when HDMI cable is connected directly to the laptop.

The company IT support team has requested me to replace the laptop, suspecting it to be some kind of hardware error. Unfortunately, I'm expatriated to another country, so replacing the device will take quite some time.

Any other suggestions on what the issue can be?

This sounds more like a Display Link driver issue than a hardware fault. The Dell D 6000 uses Display Link for video, and Windows 11 on the Elite Book may not handle it correctly. Try reinstalling graphics and Display Link drivers, disable Fast Startup, and test with one monitor first before adding the second. If it still fails, test with an HP dock that uses DP Alt Mode to confirm the laptop hardware.
