My laptop won’t stop showing a black screen. I have done the hard restart and powered off and then back on. Even letting it die completely and then trying to turn it back on. It is still not working. I’m a full time student, so I kind of need this figured out asap.

It works, everything is normal. It just shows me a black screen when I turn it on. I have it connected to display on another monitor, but it only shows that one monitor, not my actual laptop screen.

Hi @Mack_obvi,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I’m sorry you’re going through this; I understand the concern and don’t worry I’ll help you with this.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Laptop model and operating system ( Windows version)
  • When did this problem start? (After an update, crash, or suddenly)
  • Is the external monitor connected via HDMI, USB-C, or another port?
  • Do you notice any faint images or backlight glow on the laptop screen at all?

Here are some troubleshooting steps to try in the meantime:

1. Toggle display modes

  • Press Windows + P while connected to your external monitor.
  • Cycle through the options: PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend, and Second screen only.
  • Your laptop may be defaulting to display only on the external monitor.

2. Check brightness and backlight

  • Ensure the laptop brightness isn’t at zero.

3. Update or reinstall graphics drivers

  • Using your external monitor, go to Device Manager → Display adapters → right-click your GPU → Update driver or Uninstall device, then restart.
  • This can reset internal display detection and fix driver-related issues.

4. BIOS/UEFI check

  • Restart the laptop and press Esc, F10, immediately to enter BIOS.
  • If the laptop screen shows the BIOS interface, it indicates the hardware is okay and it’s likely a software/driver problem.

Once you provide your exact HP model and a bit more context, I can guide you step-by-step with more targeted instructions .

I hope this helps.
