I'm using an HP Elitebook 840 G5 with a Dell monitor right now. My machine is around 4 months old and my monitor is around 5 years old. I simply plug-and-connect from day 1, no fancy. I always use external monitors for all my notebooks at home most of them are on docks.
Do you have any error message ?
