Hello! My laptop was working perfectly fine yesterday but I turned it on today and noticed that it was almost completely black, despite the brightness being turned all the way up. The only way I have been able to try fixing the issue is by using my phone flashlight to see anything on it. It is still running but the screen is almost entirely dark, I have tried updating, restarting it etc and nothing. Does anyone know how I can fix it or is it a loss cause. For reference I have an HP 15 Laptop.

Hi @wukantu1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I’m really sorry to hear about your HP 15 laptop screen issue. It must be incredibly frustrating to see your device running but barely usable. You're not alone in this, and I’ll do everything I can to help you through it.

💡 What You’re Experiencing

From your description, it sounds like the backlight of your laptop screen may have failed. This is why you can still faintly see the display using a flashlight, but the screen appears almost completely dark.

Steps to Try Before Assuming Hardware Failure

1. Perform a Hard Reset

Sometimes a static charge or power glitch can cause display issues.

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Unplug the charger.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Plug the charger back in and turn it on.

2. Check with an External Monitor

This helps confirm if the issue is with the screen or the graphics system.

  • Connect your laptop to a TV or monitor using HDMI.
  • If the external display works fine, your laptop’s internal screen is likely the issue.

3. Use HP Diagnostics

HP has a built-in tool to test the display:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Turn it on and immediately press Esc, then F2 to enter diagnostics.
  • Run the Display Test.

If the screen remains dark during diagnostics, it’s likely a hardware issue with the backlight or display cable.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
