Hi @KV5728

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for laying that out so clearly—it really helps paint the full picture. I can imagine how frustrating it must be to have your laptop shut down mid-game, especially when everything else seems to be running within normal limits.

Based on what you've described, this sounds like a power delivery or battery protection issue, especially since the system behaves normally when plugged in. Here are some steps to help isolate and resolve the issue:

Steps to Prevent Overheating:

Ensure Proper Ventilation:

  • Make sure that the laptop is placed on a hard and flat surface, which enables appropriate airflow through the vents. Avoid using the laptop on soft surfaces like beds or couches.

Clean the Vents:

  • Dust can clog the fan and vents causing overheating; use compressed air or a gentle brush to clean the vents regularly.

Check for BIOS Updates:

  • Visit the HP Support website to check if there are any BIOS updates available for your laptop model. Sometimes, updated BIOS can help in better managing hardware components and their temperatures.

Update Drivers:

  • Ensure that your graphics card drivers and other essential drivers are up to date. You can use the HP Support Assistant tool to keep drivers updated.

Use a Cooling Pad:

  • Consider using an external cooling pad to help dissipate heat more effectively.

Check Laptop Power Settings:

  • Make sure your power settings are optimized for performance. Go to Control Panel > Power Options, and select a high performance power plan.

Steps for Game Settings:

Lower Game Graphics Settings:

  • Reduce the graphical settings of the games to lessen the load on the GPU and CPU.

Monitor System Temperatures:

  • Use tools like HWMonitor or Core Temp to monitor system temperatures and ensure they remain in a safe range.

I'm sorry to hear about the issues you're experiencing with your laptop.

Based on your description, it seems you've had multiple issues including overheating, display problems, and system behavior during a BIOS update. Let me point you to some resources that might help address these problems.

Troubleshooting Laptop Issues

  1. Overheating and Battery Issues: Ensure your laptop's vents are not blocked and that the cooling fan is functioning properly. Overheating can cause various issues such as sudden shutdowns and display problems.
  2. Display Issues: A green line on the display often indicates a hardware issue that might need professional repair.
  3. BIOS Update Problems: If your screen turned black during a BIOS update, try the following steps:
    • Hard Reset: Disconnect any external devices, shut down the laptop, remove the battery (if removable), and disconnect the power. Hold the power button for 15 seconds, then reconnect the battery and power, and restart.
    • BIOS Recovery: Some HP laptops have a BIOS recovery feature. You can access it by pressing the Windows + B keys while powering on the laptop, and holding them until you hear a beeping sound.
    • External Monitor: If the laptop screen remains off, you can check if it works with an external monitor.

HP provides support through various video tutorials which might help you further. For more detailed troubleshooting, you can follow the recommended procedures described in their videos. You can access these videos at HP Support and YouTube channels.

Thanks!
