HP Spectre x360 - 13t-ap000 CTO

Camera repeatedly stops operating, I've rolled back the driver, and it worked until the last update. Now the old driver doesn't work, either.

Hi @CWareJr,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds frustrating to deal with a malfunctioning laptop camera, especially when it was working fine before and then stopped after an update. Here are some steps to help you troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue:

1. Check Camera Permissions

  • Windows Privacy Settings: Ensure that camera access is enabled for apps:
    • Go to Settings > Privacy > Camera.
    • Ensure Allow apps to access your camera is turned on.
    • Check that the specific app you’re using is allowed access.

2. Update Camera Driver

  • Automatic Update:
    • Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
    • Find your camera under Imaging Devices (or similar).
    • Right-click the camera and select Update driver.
    • Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
  • HP Website: If automatic updates don’t work, visit the  Hp website  download the latest driver manually.

3. Roll Back Driver (if applicable)

  • If you’ve updated the driver and it’s causing issues:
    • Open Device Manager.
    • Find your camera under Imaging Devices.
    • Right-click and select Properties.
    • Go to the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver if the option is available.

4. Reinstall Camera Driver

  • Uninstall and Reinstall:
    • Open Device Manager.
    • Find your camera under Imaging Devices.
    • Right-click and select Uninstall device.
    • Restart your laptop, and Windows should automatically reinstall the driver.

5. Check for System Updates

  • Ensure your operating system is up to date:
    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
    • Check for updates and install any available updates.

6. Verify Camera Functionality

  • Test in Different Apps: Try using the camera with different applications (e.g., Camera app, Zoom, Skype) to see if the issue is app-specific.
  • Test in Safe Mode: Boot your laptop in Safe Mode to check if the camera works there. This can help identify if a third-party application or driver is causing the issue.

7. Check for Conflicts

  • Conflicting Software: Ensure no other applications are using or conflicting with the camera. Sometimes, other programs might take control of the camera and prevent it from working in the app you’re using.

8. Check Hardwar issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
