After reboot or powering on the laptop, the display screen is blank.  I can hear that the laptop is running.

Hi @yinzerva

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how worrying it feels when the laptop powers on but the screen stays blank. You’ve already noticed that the system is running, which is a very helpful observation. Let’s go through a few steps together to bring the display back to life:

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Disconnect the power adapter and remove any external devices (USB drives, accessories).
  • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power adapter and try powering on again.

Check Display Brightness and External Output

  • Press the brightness keys to ensure the screen isn’t dimmed completely.
  • If you have an external monitor, connect it to the laptop.
  • Press Windows + P and cycle through display modes (Duplicate, Extend, Second screen only) to see if the image appears externally.

Reset Display Connection

  • Power off the laptop.
  • Open and close the lid firmly to ensure the display sensor is not stuck.
  • Power on again and watch for any faint image or backlight glow.

Run Hardware Diagnostics

  • Power on the laptop and immediately press the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup Menu opens.
  • Press F2 to launch System Diagnostics.
  • Run the Display Test to check if the panel responds.
  • More details are available here: HP PC Hardware Diagnostics | HP® Support

Update BIOS and Graphics Drivers

  • Visit HP Drivers & Downloads and enter your laptop model.
  • Download and install the latest BIOS and graphics drivers.
  • Restart the laptop after installation.

Check Power and Sleep Settings

  • In Windows Settings > System > Power & Battery, ensure the laptop is not set to turn off the display too quickly.
  • Disable Fast Startup: Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > Turn off fast startup.

By following these steps, you’ll be able to determine whether the issue is with the display panel itself, the graphics driver, or a simple power setting. Since you can hear the laptop running, the system is functioning—it’s just the display that isn’t showing as expected.
