HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15

Hi! About two weeks ago, my laptop screen started to have issues. At first, it was just a shade of fading white color when I turned on my laptop. Also, when my mouse moved away from the application at the bottom of my screen, there was also an afterimage of that application. The lingering afterimage moved as my mouse moved. The fading white color disappears after 20 mins after I turned on my laptop. Few days later, there was no fading white color on my screen anymore. Instead, my screen starts flashing a vertical thick line. It flashes at the right 1/4 to 1/6 of my screen, moves to the right edge of the screen. and fades out. The color is different depending on the background. For example, it may be grey when I am opening a webpage with white background, or the line has yellow, pink, blue color if my background is pale blue. The edge of the thick line is rough. But when I am playing videos on youtube, there are no flashing thick line on the video background. I changed my laptop battery and audio about a month ago. I run the audio and battery test through HP support assistant and the results are normal. My drivers are also up to date. May I know what causes this issue and how do I fix it? Thank you.

Hi @Caroline416,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Spectre X360 Convertible 15 laptop's screen is flashing vertical fading colors, it could be indicative of a hardware or software issue. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem.

  • Restart Your Laptop: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve minor software glitches. Press and hold the power button until your laptop turns off, and then turn it back on.
  • Update Graphics Drivers: Outdated or corrupted graphics drivers can cause display issues. Visit the HP website or use the HP Support Assistant to check for and install the latest graphics driver updates.
  • Safe Mode: Boot your laptop in Safe Mode to determine if the issue is related to a software conflict. If the problem doesn't occur in Safe Mode, it's likely a software issue. If it still occurs, it may be hardware-related.
  • External Monitor: Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV to see if the issue persists. If the external display works fine, the problem may be with the laptop's built-in display.
  • Check for Loose Cables: Ensure that the display cable connecting the screen to the laptop's motherboard is properly seated. If it's loose, reseat it carefully.
  • Hardware Diagnostics: HP laptops often have built-in hardware diagnostics. You can access these diagnostics during startup (usually by pressing an F key, like F2 or F12). Run a full hardware diagnostic test to check for any hardware problems.
  • Update or Rollback Windows Updates: Sometimes, Windows updates can cause display issues. Try rolling back recent Windows updates or installing the latest updates to see if that resolves the problem.
  • Malware and Virus Scans: Perform a full system scan with your installed antivirus software to check for malware or viruses that might be affecting the display.
  • Restore or Reset Windows: If none of the above steps work, you may need to consider restoring Windows to an earlier point using System Restore or performing a Windows reset. Be sure to back up your important data before attempting these options.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
