HP Spectre x360 16 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 16-f1000 (508R7AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

When I first got my laptop I noticed that every time I looked away from my screen it would go to a lockscreen immediately and I'd always have to sign back in. I did not like this feature so I disabled everything about the facial recognition and wanted my laptop to stay on while I work so I also then changed the settings where the screen doesnt time out regardless if its on charge or not. I even went to the lengths of putting the shutter over my camera at all times. Though even with all these attempts, my laptop still times out after a few moments and even goes to the lockscreen when I physically look away from it. I do not know how this is possible when I have the camera covered and I have the settings that disable it from timing out. Something is wrong and I would like to know if anyone has a solution.

Hi @MoeHamka,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've taken several steps to disable facial recognition and prevent your laptop from locking or timing out, yet the issue persists. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try.

  • Check Power Settings: Sometimes, power settings can override individual app or system settings. Go to your power settings and make sure that the display timeout settings are set to your preferences. You can access power settings by right-clicking on the battery icon in the system tray and selecting "Power Options."
  • Check Screen Saver Settings: Even if you've disabled the screen timeout, your computer might still activate a screen saver after a certain period of inactivity. Check your screen saver settings to ensure it's disabled or set to a long duration.
  • Update Drivers: Ensure that all your drivers, especially those related to the display and camera, are up to date. Sometimes, outdated drivers can cause unexpected behavior.
  • Scan for Malware: It's possible that there's malicious software on your computer causing these issues. Run a thorough scan with your antivirus program to check for any malware or viruses.
  • Reset Windows Hello Settings: Although you've disabled facial recognition, there might be residual settings causing issues. Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and under Windows Hello, select "Remove" to reset any Windows Hello settings.
  • Reset Power Settings: If you've made changes to power settings and they're not taking effect, you can try resetting them to their default values. You can do this by going to Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings, then select "Restore default settings for this plan" for each power plan listed.

By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot and resolve the issue with your laptop's screen timing out and locking unexpectedly.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
