I have a strip of very fine lines going across my screen (bottom half) which is around 1 cm in width. I believe this is getting worse and was wondering whether this is a hardware issue? If so, is it the graphics card which needs replacing? Any help on this would be appreciated as I would like to get this sorted out before it gets any worse! Thank you.

Hi @MediDegani
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
I understand how worrying it must feel to see those fine lines appearing and spreading across your screen. You’ve already noticed the issue getting worse, and it’s good that you’re looking into it now before it affects usability further.
Let’s carefully go through steps to help isolate whether this is a display panel issue or something related to the graphics system.
Step 1: Run a Display Test
- Restart your laptop and press F2 repeatedly to enter HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI).
- Select Component Tests > Display Test.
- Follow the on‑screen instructions to check for hardware faults in the screen itself.
- If the lines appear during this test, it points to a display panel issue.
- If the lines do not appear, the problem may be related to software or drivers.
Step 2: Connect to an External Monitor
- Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV using HDMI.
- Check if the lines appear on the external display.
- If the external monitor shows a clean image, the issue is likely with the laptop’s screen.
- If the lines appear on both, the graphics card or driver may be involved.
Step 3: Update Graphics Drivers
- Go to the HP driver page for your model: HP Software and Driver Downloads
- Enter your product model and select Windows 11 as the operating system.
- Download and install the latest Intel/NVIDIA/AMD graphics driver depending on your configuration.
- Restart the laptop and check if the lines persist.
Step 4: Adjust Display Settings
- Right‑click the desktop and select Display settings.
- Ensure the resolution and refresh rate are set to the recommended values.
- Incorrect settings can sometimes cause artifacts on screen.
Step 5: Use HP App for Diagnostics
- Open the HP App from the Start menu.
- Go to Support > Troubleshooting > Diagnose & Fix.
- Run the scan to check for display or driver issues.
Step 6: Observe Behavior
- If the lines only appear on the laptop screen and not on an external monitor, the display panel itself may be at fault.
- If the lines appear everywhere, the graphics card or system board could be the cause.
By following these steps, you’ll be able to determine whether the issue is with the screen hardware or the graphics system. Since you’ve already noticed the strip getting worse, testing with diagnostics and an external monitor will give you clarity on the next step.

Hi there. I used an external monitor via the HDMI port and the lines do not appear on that monitor which means "the display panel itself may be at fault" accordning to your instructions! So what is the solution for this and what are my options? Thank you.

We sincerely thank you for your patience and co-operation during this troubleshooting process.
This confirm the hardware with the laptop's screen and needs servicing.
I'm sending you a private message to guide you on the next steps.
Take care and have a great day!
