Hey, I am trying to use a dell monitor with VGA connection to my USB c thunderbolt port but it won't detect the monitor, and the monitor won't detect any output from my laptop. My coworkers, who have a mac and a thinkpad with windows 10 respectively, have tried connecting and have no issues doing so. The issue appears to be with my laptop or the port itself but how do I identify the specific problem, and how do I fix it?

@jlimarzi4,

Welcome to the HP Forums!

Thank you for posting your query on this forum, it's a great place to find answers.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

In order that I may provide you with an accurate solution, I will need a few more details.

  • Have you tried connecting any other USB type C device to the port and checked?
  • Have you made any software or hardware changes on the computer?

While you respond to that, I checked the specifications of your computer and see that there are two USB Type C ports on the computer, one on the left side and one on the right.

The right-side USB Type C ports don’t support the display. I recommend you connect the monitor to the left side USB Type C ports and test.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Looking at my ports, I only see one port that resembles a USB c port and that is on the left side, and that is the port I was trying to use.

I do have two USB 3 ports, one on either side.

This is my first time trying to connect something via USB c, though I have successfully connected a different device through the USB 3 ports. For this particular moitor though, the cord I have available is VGA to USB c.

I have not made any changes to the software or hardware that came with the laptop.

@jlimarzi4,

It is great to have you back and your patience is greatly appreciated.

Is it possible to share a photo of the USB Type C ports on your computer?

As informed in my previous post, the right-side USB Type C ports don’t support the display and you need to connect the monitor to the left side USB Type C ports and test.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Truthfully I think my port is damaged, which is ridiculous because this laptop is brand new. It worked spontaneaously yesterday, but after I unplugged it, it hasn't detected the monitor again since.

I have no idea why it connected to the monitor at that time, yet refuses to do so again. I'm in the NYC area, can you direct me to a local hp service center so they can take a look at it?

Hello, i've the same problem. Could you help me too? Thank you in advance.

May be, i can use BIOS in advanced mode and change settings for USB-C? Lan, usb and audio work correctly via USB-C. The problem is only with video. May be it's important, i try to use HP Elite USB-C Dock G4. Firmware is latest.
