I have an HP Envy Laptop product #53726AV. I purchased an HP Universal USB-C Multiport Hub so that I could have the larger monitor screen and keyboard at my desk. The input to my monitor is with a VGA cable. I have a VGA to DisplayPort adaptor cable for the connection to the Multiport Hub. Also, I am using the two USB ports on the Multiport Hub for my mouse and keyboard. The Multiport Hub is connected to my HP Envy laptop using the supplied USB-C cable. I have the USB-C cable from the Multiport Hub plugged in to the laptop using one of the two USB-C ports on my Envy laptop which are identified as "Thunderbolt4 USB4 type-C with USB Power Delivery, Display Port 1.4, and HP Sleep and Charge".
When I wake my HP laptop from sleep, my larger monitor sometimes comes to life but more often than not it will not receive a signal from the laptop/multiport hub. My keyboard and mouse always come to life, but not always the monitor. Is there something that I needed to do in order to have this set up properly?

Your machine is an HP ENVY 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17-cr0000 IDS Base Model as shown:
https://partsurfer.hp.com/partsurfer?searchtext=537Z6AV
It has following options
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_6517008-6517111-16
which says it has "(2) USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C with Thunderbolt™ Gen 4 ports (right side; USB Power Delivery, DisplayPort™ 1.4 and HDCP, HP Sleep and Charge) ports,
The problem is your cable/adapter. From VGA (analog) to DP (digital) you need a proper converter. The dock has HDMI and DP out, why not use them DIRECTLY ? A proper converter may cost nearly the price of a new monitor with HDMI or DP port..

I am using an HP product #AS615AA DisplayPort to VGA adaptor to get from my old VGA monitor's cable to the DisplayPort input on the hub. Are you saying that my old "analog" monitor is not compatible, even with an adapter? In other words, if I had a newer "digital" monitor my problem would be solved? Thanks for your help.

I don't know what is the adapter. Doe it work as a converter ? Yes, DP (fro the dock) to HDMI or to DVI should work. But HDMI to DP is another story, you need a bidirectional cable.

I'm not sure that I understand what you are saying about getting a "converter" instead of an "adapter". What is the difference between a converter and an adapter. Currently I have an "adapter" (HP product #ASS615AA) with the Display Port side plugged into the hub. The other end of this "adapter" cable has a "VGA" connection. I have this "VGA" plug connected to the original "VGA" cable that is coming out of my analog monitor. Everyone is telling me that this should work, but it's only working intermittently. Sometimes it will come to life during the wake up of my laptop, and other times only my laptop screen will come to life. I then have to unplug the hub (C connector) - wait a few seconds, and plug it back in. Other times when it does work my analog monitor will have the screen resolution changed to a much larger font. Then, the next time I wake up my laptop, the font will go back to normal. Is there something on my laptop that is not set correctly to handle the external monitor through a hub?

Adapter simply gives you the cables inside from a to b
Converter gives you above and CONVERTERS signals from analog to digital and vice versa.
>>> the original "VGA" cable that is coming out of my analog monitor
Nothing wrong with that because it USES native VGA to VGA (analog to analog).
Hope this makes sense.
Regards.
