Problem started two months ago. Mouse wanders to the top right hand corner of the screen. Not every time but a lot. The Touch pad ver. is Synaptic SMBus ClickPad 17.0.8.0 - 8/1/2013. I have adjusted settings in the mouse properties, changed the batteries in the mouse frequently, and have shutdown and restarted the computer when this happens. This seems to help temporary. It is a new mouse. Only updates have been from Microsoft. I have seen reference to touch pad ghosting and installing drivers. However do not know if it is caused by the touch pad or mouse. If it is drivers are there current versions? I know I will have to change out computer but hoping later not sooner. Looking for help from the experts.

@Jimje I'm glad that worked, that said, a mouse usually uses the generic windows drivers, although, if you wish to look up specific drivers from HP for your device: click here to access the HP website,
If you wish to thank me for my efforts, you could click on "Accept as solution" on my post as the solution should help others too.

@Jimje Welcome to HP Community!
Attempt using an alternate/external mouse.
(If that works when the touchpad is disabled on Synaptic software, it would mean that it's a touchpad failure,
However, if the external mouse doesn't work either, it could be a software/driver issue).
Uninstall and reinstall the drivers for your mouse:
Go to the Device Manager and select your mouse. Uninstall it and then restart your computer. During restart, your mouse driver will automatically be reinstalled.
- 1. Click on Start and type ‘Device Manager’.
- 2. Click Device Manager.
- 3. Click + sign next to Mouse.
- 4. Right-click on mouse entry and choose "uninstall".
- 5. Restart your computer.

I was using an external mouse (ONN Wireless), and not the touch pad. Followed your directions to reinstall the mouse driver. The mouse icon reappeared and seems to work normally. Hopefully it will stop wandering now. Manufacturer of the mouse does not offer driver downloads.
Do you know if there are any updates (recent) for both the touch pad driver and default compliant mouse. I have not singled out the control pad to see if it is getting faulty. Was afraid to uninstall this device - not knowing what the results would be if it was uninstalled in the device manager. Was afraid to not have a point device available
