My AMD Radeon RX 6600M has a code 43 driver error

My laptop has been acting a little sluggish when watching Youtube, so i updated my computer via windows update and BIOS update. I restarted my computer but that didnt make a difference. It took some time but i finally found whats wrong in the drivers and printers section. When i clicked my laptop it showed this.

Then i navigated and saw my AMD driver had the error and it shows this

I then looked at the events and theres errors back to 2014, so i guess i hadn't fixed it since then via updates. These are the type of errors below.

 

Would like some assistance in fixing the error, hoping its not a ruined graphics driver that would require a laptop replacement. Thank you in advance!

Your laptop still under warranty? 

Do this:

1. Download the latest AMD software version from AMD driver site for rx6600m
2. Pause windows update and Download ddu (display driver uninstaller) and run it in safe mode
3. Select device type GPU and then brand "AMD"
4. Click on clean and restart.
5. Now, install and software or driver that you downloaded. After installation, check if code 43 remains or disappear.

I dont have warranty but followed your steps. I downloaded the DDU and rebooting in safe mode and was installing my AMD again afterwards when i came across this error.

So it looks like the AMD is not installing for some reason, is there a way to get it to download correctly? Thank you for your response!

This happens after you install and software and when you try to open? Doesn't device manager show same? Which CPU/GPU you have?

No it happened during download, i tried again but this time i chose the option to clear the existing version and did accept and install instead of accept and express install and i didnt get the message again. However checking the device manager it still shows code 43 after everything. These are my specs in my 'about this device':

Processor AMD Ryzen 7 5800H with Radeon Graphics (3.20 GHz)
Installed RAM 16.0 GB (15.3 GB usable)
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Edition Windows 11 Home
Version 25H2

I checked the events again after installing successfully and these are the errors i got

May be a error because your laptop have two GPUS and both need seperate driver. Follow these steps:

Before starting, create two folders on your Desktop: one main folder for all drivers files, and a separate folder only for the AMD Adrenalin iGPU (Ryzen 7 5800H) installer to keep it clearly separated and avoid confusion during installation.

Here are the driver files:
I. AMD Adrenalin Software (iGPU – Ryzen 7 5800H):
Visit AMD Driver page → Processors → Ryzen → 5000 Series → 5800H → Submit → Download. (Save this is seperate place)

II. AMD Adrenalin (dGPU – RX 6600M):
AMD Driver page → Graphics → Radeon RX → 6000 Series → RX 6500M → Submit → Download

III. AMD Laptop Chipset Driver:
AMD Driver page → Chipsets → Laptop Chipsets → AMD Ryzen™ and Athlon™ Mobile (Chipsets) → Submit → Download

IV. Download and install 7-zip

• Now pause Windows Update and disconnect Wi-Fi or Ethernet, whichever you use, and don't connect or resume updates until I say.

• Boot into Safe Mode, then extract DDU and open it. Select Device type GPU, then select AMD and click on Clean and Restart. Wait for completion until DDU uninstalls the driver properly.

• After restart, right-click on the Windows icon, then click on Installed Apps. From here, find and uninstall any chipset driver software. If it's not available, then you never installed the chipset driver manually and those users skip this point. After uninstalling the chipset driver software, click on Restart.

• After restart, Open the folder where you saved the AMD iGPU Adrenalin installer, right-click it → Open with 7-Zip, then go to Packages → Drivers and extract only the “Display” folder to your Desktop (do not extract the full installer).

• Now open Device Manager → Expand Display adapters → right-click Microsoft Basic Display Adapter→ Update driver → Browse my computer for drivers → Browse → select the extracted Display folder on Desktop → Next and wait for installation to complete. Close device manager when done

• Now, we will install the dGPU driver normally using software. Open the folder where your remaining downloaded files are located. Double-click the AMD Adrenalin (dGPU) installer, follow the on-screen instructions to install it (like Accept → Installation Type: Full Install → Install) and let it finish. Once completed, close the installer and AMD Software if it opens automatically, then restart your laptop.

• Next, install the AMD Chipset software normally. Double-click the installer, follow the on-screen instructions, keep all devices/drivers selected, and click Install. Let it complete and restart your laptop when done.

• Now after restart, connect to Wi-Fi, then immediately open the Microsoft update hide tool (wushowhide.diagcab) from the folder when your save files. Click on "Hide Update," then select every update whose name starts with "AMD" or "Advanced Micro Devices," etc. Make sure to select all updates labeled as "AMD" or "Advanced Micro."

(If you don't see these updates in the windows hide tool then you can skip this part as windows is not overwriting the driver in your system so there's nothing to hide.)

• After selecting all, click Next. All updates you selected will be shown as fixed on the next screen. If it shows, then you have successfully done this.

• Now restart and Windows will not overwrite AMD drivers anymore. You can now resume the Windows Update.

• Check if issue got fixed

I followed everything and installed the drivers in order. I hid the amd update and got the fixed notification then restarted. Unfortunately despite everything, the code 43 is still showing, im not sure whats going on, i was certain what you put was going to work😭 Looking at events for the driver, should it have this many listed on the side? maybe thats the reason not sure, the first three are before today, the last one it looks like its the one i just installed. Im certain i had removed the older ones, not sure why its showing this. The last recent one also shows no errors, so perhaps i have too many of the same older drivers somewhere?

One more idea, use ddu in safe mode and uninstall amd driver with it. Then run windows update and let it install recommended driver. If it doesn't able to find, then open that Microsoft hide tool:

1.   Select Show hidden updates.
2. Check the amd updates
3. Click Next and finish the wizard.
4. Go back to Windows Update and check for updates again. If they still doesn't appears then Restart and check again

Restarted and had windows update install the AMD driver. Still shows code error🙃 Does this mean i'll need to take it to a service desk or is there a different solution? Again thank you for your help

I have one last suggestion: use a Windows 11 bootable USB and perform a clean installation of Windows 11. Back up your important data to an external drive or pen drive before you begin. During the Windows installation, choose Custom installation, select the Windows drive, delete that drive’s partition, and then install Windows on the resulting unallocated space.

Note: If you have more than one drive, make sure you do not delete the other drive or its partitions. Only focus on the Windows drive and its partition

If the above solution does not work, the fault is likely in the GPU itself. Visit your nearest authorized HP service center for diagnosis and ask them to tell you the fault and repair price first. If they find that the GPU is faulty, the repair cost may not be worth it, as it is often similar to the price of a new laptop.

Choose wisely. Do not opt for repair if the price is not reasonable, which is often the case with GPU or motherboard issues. Better option in this case is getting new gaming laptop instead of geting this one repaired. You can locate the nearest HP service center using our Service Center Locator:​
