I have an HP Spectre that I purchased new over a year ago. I oftentimes use it with an external monitor, which I connect using a HDMI to USB-C cable. This has worked for me for a while, but today, it just did not recognize anything plugged into it. Here is what I have tried:
- Unplugging and plugging back in
- Using the other usb-c port
- Turning my monitor on and off again
- Restarting my computer
- Unchecking "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" under power management in the USB Root Hubs.
- Updating the drivers (and restarting)
All to no avail. What can I do to help restore a connection?

@carolinebroady Welcome to HP Community!
I understand that the HP Spectre x360 no longer recognizes my external monitor.
Try updating the computer, this will install the latest updates -
Step 1 Windows Updates -
1) In the search box, type, and open Windows Updates.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.
Step 2 Install updates using HP Support Assistant
- In the search box, type, and open HP Support Assistant.
- Check for updates.
- If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.
Note: If you do not have HP Support Assistant installed, Click here to download the same.
Please click the below link to download the Thunderbolt Controller Driver.

I have tried installing updates, but there were none to install. Eventually, it just started working again. I am not sure why. But then I started having issues with my camera and microphone. 😞
I think the computer just is not working that great, which is sad since it is not very old (<2 years)

Thank you for the update.
In that case, I would suggets you perform the system reset.
Windows 10 has a reset feature that repairs your computer by reinstalling the operating system. This feature is recommended for recovery because it reinstalls Windows 10 while either preserving your personal data and customizations or removing all your personal data.
You have a choice of two methods to reset your computer.
-
If Windows 10 loads correctly, see the section titled Perform a Windows 10 system reset in Windows in this document.
-
If Windows 10 does not start correctly, see the section titled Perform a Windows 10 system reset through Windows Recovery Environment in this document.
Have a nice day!!
