The screen is full of random pixels, runs slow, will turn the screen black and then lock up.
I have disabled the Intel HD530 in the device manager and the computer runs fine for most things.
After hours with NVidia, it was determined that the HD530 controls when the switch to the 960m occurs.
Is there any way to make the 960m the default for everything?
Everything is up to date and I mean everything.

@Carl-900 Welcome to HP Community!
The dedicated/discrete GPU is system managed and cannot be changed or set as default manually, there are a few tweaks that could be made using the steps in this link: click here to explore, that said, if you've confirmed that one of the two GPU's isn't working, you may want to perform a hardware test to identify hardware malfunction and we could work on repairing or replacing the GPU that no longer works:
Install the latest version of the HP Hardware diagnostics (UEFI) on your device using this link: Click here for details
- Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
- Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
- On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests.
- Click Extensive Test.
- Click Run once, or Loop until error.
- While the test is running, the time remaining and test result for each component display on the screen.
- If a component fails a test, write down the failure ID (24-digit code) for when you respond back to us.

I did the video test and they all passed.
Tomorrow I can run the full test when I am gone.
The GTX 960M is a Nvidia card. The link you posted is for Raedon so none of the will work.
When on tech support with NVidia, I was told the processor switching happens within the Intel HD530 card. In order for the machine to run, the HD530 must be disabled. If enabled, the screen gets a ton or random pixels, the screen flickers and will eventually lock up. If they HD530 is disabled, the machine works fine.
Games will just have a very slow, so slow, you can't exit the game without using task manager.
We tried - settings - display - graphic settings to manually set what programs will use the 960M.
When you open the program, the GPU utilization int he task manager still shows 0%.
Under advanced settings - display adapter properties, the 960m isn't shown.
The option to change the default GPU from the bios isn't available because HP does not load the advanced setting option for any laptop save for the business models.
It appears as my choices are a motherboard at $400 (estimated) or a new PC.
I opened up the laptop to see if anything was obviously loose or unseated, but everything looks fine. Well the way HD is installed is pretty sorry as it is just sandwiched between some foam and some mounting brackets that just float. No wonder the first HD failed. This laptop very rarely travel either.
Thank you for your input.
