That sounds frustrating! Horizontal lines and display issues can stem from hardware problems, loose connections, or driver conflicts.
Here are some steps to troubleshoot:
Check External Display
- Connect your laptop to an external monitor using HDMI or DisplayPort.
- If the external display works fine, the issue is likely with your laptop’s screen or internal connections.
Perform a Hard Reset
- Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
- Hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain residual power.
- Reconnect the power adapter and try turning it on.
Update Graphics Drivers
- Boot into Safe Mode (Shift + Restart > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Enable Safe Mode).
- Open Device Manager, expand Display Adapters, and update your graphics driver.
Run HP Diagnostics
- Turn off the laptop and press Esc repeatedly while turning it on.
- Select F2 > System Tests > Display Test to check for hardware issues.
Check Display Cable Connections
- If you’re comfortable opening the laptop, inspect the display cable connecting the screen to the motherboard.
- A loose or damaged cable can cause flickering or horizontal lines.
