What do I do if I am trying to input my PIN and the letters on my keyboard doesn't work. Numbers do work.

@PSandler,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

It sounds like you’re encountering an issue where the letters on your keyboard aren’t working, but the numbers are functioning correctly. This can sometimes happen due to the Num Lock function or a software/hardware issue. Let’s troubleshoot step-by-step:

Step 1: Check the Num Lock Key:

  1. Look for a key labeled Num Lock (or NumLk) on your keyboard.
  2. Press it once to toggle the Num Lock off, and try typing again.

Step 2: Use the On-Screen Keyboard to Log In:

If disabling Num Lock doesn’t work:

  1. Click the Ease of Access icon on the bottom-right of the login screen (it looks like a clock or gear).
  2. Select On-Screen Keyboard.
  3. Use this virtual keyboard to enter your PIN and log in.

Step 3: Check Keyboard Layout Settings:

After logging in:

  1. Open SettingsTime & LanguageLanguage.
  2. Click Keyboard Options and ensure the correct keyboard layout (e.g., US QWERTY) is selected.

Step 4: Update or Reinstall Keyboard Drivers:

  1. Open Device Manager (search for it in the Start menu).
  2. Expand Keyboards.
  3. Right-click your keyboard and choose Update Driver.
    • If the issue persists, select Uninstall Driver, then restart your laptop to let Windows reinstall it.

Step 5: Test with an External Keyboard:

  1. Connect an external USB or Bluetooth keyboard.
  2. If the external keyboard works fine, the issue may be hardware-related with your laptop’s keyboard.

Step 6: Test in BIOS/UEFI:

To rule out a software issue:

  1. Restart your laptop and press Esc, F2, or F10 during boot to enter BIOS/UEFI.
  2. Test your keyboard functionality there.
    • If the letters don’t work in BIOS, it’s likely a hardware issue.

Still Having Trouble?

If none of these steps work, the keyboard may need repair or replacement. Please reach out to HP Support for further assistance or consider visiting a local service/laptop repair center.

Let us know how it goes!

Kind Regards,
