Hi @rabbiump,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP laptop's display has stopped working, here are several troubleshooting steps you can follow to diagnose and potentially fix the issue.
Initial Checks
- Check for Physical Damage: Ensure there is no visible damage to the screen or the laptop body.
- Restart the Laptop: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve display issues.
- Brightness Settings: Make sure the brightness settings are not turned all the way down. Use the function keys to adjust the brightness.
External Display Test
- Connect to an External Monitor: Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV using HDMI, VGA, or DisplayPort.
- Switch Display Modes: Use the Fn key along with the corresponding function key (often F4, F5, or F8) to switch display modes. There should be an option to extend, duplicate, or switch display.
Hardware Checks
- Check Display Cable Connection: If you're comfortable opening your laptop, ensure the display cable connecting the screen to the motherboard is secure.
- Inspect RAM: Sometimes, reseating the RAM can resolve display issues. Remove and reinsert the RAM modules.
Software and Driver Issues
- Safe Mode Boot: Boot your laptop into Safe Mode to see if the display works there. If it does, the issue might be related to software or drivers.
- Update Graphics Drivers: Use another device to download the latest graphics drivers from the HP or GPU manufacturer's website and install them on your laptop.
- Reset Display Settings: Reset your display settings to default.
BIOS and System Checks
- BIOS Screen: Restart your laptop and try to enter the BIOS setup (usually by pressing Esc, F2, F10, or Del during boot). If the BIOS screen displays, the problem may be with the operating system or drivers.
- System Restore: If you suspect a recent update or software installation caused the issue, perform a system restore to revert to a previous state.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
