HP 240 14 inch G10 Notebook PC (78H79AV)

My "HP 240 14-inch G10 Notebook PC" screen is not working. It went completely black earlier today and I thought it was a battery issue. I got home and connected it to an external monitor where it worked. It did not register there was a laptop screen. I have attempted to trouble shoot it myself by updating it (post screen issue) thinking that may fix it, I have done a hardware reset in settings and am currently factory resetting my laptop. I am currently factory resetting it, which won’t help if its a wiring issue.

If anyone else has any other ideas that would be appreciated.

@Anderman82Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the laptop screen not working!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Since your HP 240 14-inch G10 Notebook PC works with an external monitor but does not detect the laptop screen, let’s go through some troubleshooting steps to help resolve the issue.

Update Graphics & Chipset Drivers

If an image appears on the external monitor, the issue could be a graphics driver conflict. Here’s what to do:

  1. With the external monitor connected, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads.
  2. Download and install the latest graphics and chipset drivers for your laptop.
  3. If an updated BIOS version is available, update it by following this guide.

If the issue persists after updating the drivers and BIOS, proceed to the next step.

Check for a Hardware Issue

  • If the external monitor displays an image, but the laptop screen remains black even after updates, the LCD screen might be defective.
  • In this case, contact HP Support for further assistance or service options.

Recover the Notebook BIOS

If the screen remains blank, you can attempt to recover and reinstall the last working BIOS version:

  1. Turn off the laptop and connect it to a power source.
  2. Press and hold the Windows + B keys.
  3. While holding the keys, press the power button for 1 second, then release all keys.
  4. The screen may stay blank for up to 40 seconds, and you might hear beeping sounds.
  5. If the HP BIOS Update screen appears, let the process complete.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, you may need further troubleshooting. Click here for additional troubleshooting steps.

Let me know if this helps! 😊

Take care, and have an amazing day!
